Dwarf Fortress is a pretty complex game already, so I don't want to add a lot more to it.

But I would like some kind of mod that adds a general magic system to the world or a variety of spellcasting abilities to dwarves, without adding an entire encyclopedia's worth of other stuff.

The only mods that I have found that add magic completely overhaul the entire game, adding new races, all sorts of new materials, etc. Anyone got any suggestions?

Have you checked out Eric blanks magic mod?
It adds a lot of arcana stuff, it adds a lot though.
