Beard Salon
« on: March 25, 2024, 10:02:44 pm »

So I noticed that some dwarves had shaven heads, braided beards and so on.  Based on the fashion of their culture.  But after years of being in their new homes how do they maintain their good looks?   What happens if fashion changes?  How do they keep up with the neighbors?

I suggest a workshop called a Beard Salon, or just a Barber Shop, where specialists in hair care can help citizens keep their beards trimmed and properly cared for.  Beard oils rubbed in, maybe a good shampoo for the hair, maybe a quick shave.

Just a suggestion.  I assume it may have already been ...well..suggested.  But I figured I would bring it up.

That does sound like a fun suggestion. A service industry like hair care seems to me like another interesting job and skill for dwarves to level up in. I think it would be nice to see how the dwarves customize themselves. Hopefully we could get funny descriptions.

For sure it sounds fun, plus it could be tied to how characters see others, like dwarves could be impressed by a noble with a masterwork beard or hair, maybe even be scary to others in the battle

This sort of personal care sounds good to me. I think it would be a nice tie in to the extravagance need as a way for dwarves to feel good about themselves. Could also tie in to hair styles as a cultural/civilization-level topic with dwarves seeking new fashionable hair styles, and immigrants wanting to fit in/xenophobes ridiculing 'outsiders' who don't adopt local styles.

And of course, a degree of character customization for adventurers.

Could be tied into a cultural perception of hair-length attached to grime.

Dwarves consider long beards to be clean, whilst human and elven cultures do not, so would place pressure on dwarves that join their hearths to trim their beards down to a level that is more appropriate. Could be a nice way to train surgeon skills and give a nice mood by letting dwarves and especially eccentric dwarves change and groom their hairstyles to prevent further length growth or be forced to go humiliatingly bald as punishment in fortress mode.

The dwarf entity mandates a specific beard length (length 100+, or medium-length), it would be quite the return to form to flesh out hair care.

Perhaps dwarves with a high vanity or orderliness could have the personal need to "Observe hygiene", and fulfill it themselves during a soapy bath or preferentially seek the services of a barber. The barber's own hygiene need as well as "help somebody" could be fulfilled during this last interaction.

I like using the existing surgeon skill, it gives more utility. I also think that maintaining a salon (a location on a meeting hall?) could serve as a way to use up more soap, since bars of it last for a while.

If we wanted to add another interaction that the portrait system could support, bleaching hair with milk of lime and applying dyes could have lots of interesting cultural ramifications. It could be more than just zany dwarves and adventurers picking a color similar to their favorite color, there could be practices where proper warriors or priests are expected to dye their hair (or other tissues) a certain color.
