Thanks for the turn, Sal! Ugbarroc turned out to be quite an interesting guy. Perhaps he's the mad main character of this Lovecraftian drama.

No worries, Quantum Drop - that puts it to brewer bob!

Looking forward to it, bob!

Looks like I won't be having spare time to play this turn after all, so I'll have to skip my turn and let the next one do the spooking.

I'll take a quick turn in a few hours and then reorganize the queue. Check your PMs for questions!

       The Concerns of the Deep

Spring of 677:
Report by Pho Ondelso
In these desolate halls, marred by the ineffable pain of these poor souls, I find myself haunted by a grim inquiry: are those creatures of the night truly evil? Do they do this for the sake of some internal motivation, some sick compulsion? Or are they merely apathetic? Bereft of cognizance of we fragile creatures which tread upon this accursed rock? Do you take notice of a crushed snail beneath the boot of an indifferent wanderer after a dreary autumnal downpour-do these abhorrent creatures even notice we are here? Are they even able to?

The fortress of Lovecrafted entombs me-the once-resplendent marble now tarnished, a grotesque canvas stained with writhing somethings just below the surface. The structure looms, remaining strong, tall, unwavering, apathetic to the horrors that once ran amok here. My companions and I persist in our appalling excavations through these agonized passages, where coffins lie interspersed with treasures that defy dwarven understanding, or even calculation, with tatters of cloth whispering secrets, and the shattered remnants of not-long-dead bones. From the infinite depths beyond the walls, an eldritch hum calls out to us, a sinister melody that beckons us deeper, deeper still.

With shaking hands, I send by my writings now, unsure of what we will encounter. If we do not return, vanquish Lovecrafted from the maps, and let the world become apathetic to it. So it might go unnoticed, to languish in obscurity-a fate befitting it...to be as unnoticed and unheeded as a snail crushed after an autumn rain.

[report continues]

I don't exactly know why, but everyone's taken to calling me the "Boofer". I'll take it, I don't mind. A little bit of camaraderie would do us all well. You know - lift the spirits!

To tell the truth, things haven't been going well. The humming, the damn humming. I'm certain the others hear it too, though they won't admit it.

Baron Ugburroc is the only one brave enough to admit it, but he has been acting odd lately. I worry he knows something that I do not. He goes on making splints and crutches. Is this hypochondria, or is he planning violence?

Please, no more violence. Lovecrafted has seen enough agony. Just outside the walls are mountains of dead, and in here, their ghosts beckon us out - to join them, no doubt. Remember when Rigoth killed four freaks with a bagpipe?

I still hear it playing at night, echoing down the marble corridors...

Those restless dead! The poor souls.

They're worse than the freaks.

That's it! We cannot live like this...The humming! The wailing ghosts, the haunted bagpipes. I can't take it.

Open the gates, and prepare the coffins. I'll take my own happily.

Here they come! The hordes of foul undead! Let us die, fellow dwarves, let us die and join Rigoth in glory. Pray merely that enough of us survive to bury the rest.

Oh... It seems many of the undead out there are...well, just nice guys.

As the gates opened, dozens of visitors came rushing in. Now is our chance, dwarves of Lovecrafted! News from the outside! Have the mountainhalls abandoned us?

Honestly, being hard at work has done me wonders. And being out, out away from that persistent humming.

I can see it, in the faces of the dwarves around me. A great burden has been lifted by opening the gates.

I thought Zas was the mad doctor, but Feb doesn't seem much better.

More fresh plants are taken from outside, and we haven't brewed anything for some time, our stockpiles are overflowing as is. The visitors in the tavern fill us in on what is going abroad, and Ugburroc rubs elbows with the foreign diplomats.

Great things are happening, finally! Finally, at Lovecrafted!

Those
Damn
Freaks.

OOC:
Save is HERE!

Quantum Drop says they are on the save - the roster has been updated on the OP

I only played for a couple months, mostly I was in menus looking at moods, skills, and orders. I added quite a few more farmers. I turned off the infinite brew order because we've got 1000+ wine, and about 100 edible things. I also put all the cave pygmies into one cage of absolute nightmares, it's in the down-stairs animal stockpile, constructed, not movable right now. I chucked a ton of coffins behind the barracks, and started building some in the wandering corridors deep down. There's still dwarves to be buried, but I put down /many, but not all/ of the ghosts.

Also a forgotten beast is in the first caverns, seemingly getting beat up by bugs.

surely both!

looks like the bogans left  huh? With their frequent sieges I wouldn't be surprised if the next player was hit with another siege. them or the pirates, who are less numerous but better armed.

Yeah, in the interest of a good story, I prepared for a glorious last stand, only for the bogans to leave just before the gate opened, their dog still stuck in a tree.

Ah well, it turned into a clean up job instead

Sounds like a typical day in dwarf fortress: waiting for something epic and all you find is someone stuck in a tree.

Punching people in the head is a perfectly normal way to have intellectual discussions especially for dwarves.

Quantum Drop has had something come up, so they're out. I haven't heard back from Travis, so the save is up in the air. Salmeuk, or bob, go ahead. Unless a new overspooker would like to join!
