[bAsk him what the tastiest thing he’s eaten is[/b]

Psst!  Youre missing a ‘]’!

Heh, my bad, I completely missed that.

Okay, so clearly we need to steal one of those ration rehydrators, or convince someone to give one to us using our newfound telepathy powers. In our travels have we seen anyone leave one lying around?

I'm not sure what physical changes we should request, but one option would be to ask for ones that would help us with fighting, which is apparently in our future. I'm thinking a defensive mutation combined with an offensive mutation.

Ask him to harden our skin and generally make us much more durable than your average bird. Also, add fire-breathing.

Ask him who is going to "come for our magic link". That sounds spooky!

got enough magic in you to make a few changes

Ask him how we gained this magic inside us, and how we could get more.

Ask him what this “magic” stuff is, and how it works.

"Well.. it's the universal force created by the cycle of life and death.  This is a young universe, a very fresh place with a lot of power going around, some from the last cycle, but many from this cycle and beyond.  Things haven't really been settled down yet into firm rules.  It lets people do things, bend the rules a bit, tap into the energies of distant stars."

He then sighs a bit.

"You can do anything you want, really, if you have the time, the effort, and the contacts.  There are creatures that live everywhere, and you can tap into their existances.  Want to make fire?  There are creatures living on the surfaces of stars.  Want to shape metal and stone?  There are creatures that float in magma and breathe iron.

..but I'll handle that for you.  Let me know what you want and I'll find what creature can do that, and make a trade.  They can tap into your rare birdiness and you can get the ability to ride lightning, or whatever.  It just takes time and effort."

Equivalent exchange?

Ask him if there's anything we should look out for that would be hostile towards us because of our magic.

Okay, so clearly we need to steal one of those ration rehydrators, or convince someone to give one to us using our newfound telepathy powers. In our travels have we seen anyone leave one lying around?

They're mounted into walls in some places as public services.  You can also buy them.  They're not that expensive.

Ask him who is going to "come for our magic link". That sounds spooky!

"Well, if you die someone else can take your power and become magic.  Or a magic person can kill you and give your power to one of their mates."

Ask him how we gained this magic inside us, and how we could get more.

"Either you were born with it, and it just showed up recently, or you got it from a dead mage.  Since it's link-based, I don't really know which it was.  As for more, you can't really get more, but it'll take some time to express itself, and you can keep making changes or optimizations, so you'll get better with it with time."

Ask him if there's anything we should look out for that would be hostile towards us because of our magic.

"Other mages, people or things who want to be magic, members of the war..

..anyway, I think you're waking up now, so catch you tomorrow.

Ask him to harden our skin and generally make us much more durable than your average bird. Also, add fire-breathing.

At that, the welding mask goes away, and a plumber's wrench appears in place of the torch.

"I'll get to work on that, but the feathers will make it tricky.  They go through your skin.  Give me a few days."

Day Three

Yup, bigger again.  You're now.. well still a small bird, but if this keeps up, tomorrow you might be a medium-sized bird!  You put your head back down into your fluff, and you certainly don't feel any harder, but he did say it'll take a few days.

Hopefully that will offer us some protection. Depending on just how hard and durable we get, we should be able to use that offensively as well, by colliding with our targets from the air.

Try finding a newspaper or unattended tablet that can give us some insight on the war mentioned by our fish-person.

Find a friend.  At very least a friendly.

One day someone with a magic link will come after us.

And we will kill them, directly or not.

We will get to give their magic link to one of our mates.

We need a mate.  Some sort of mate.  So we better find someone suitable to become our magical partner.

So…. Are we looking for a friend, or another oriole?

We've been changing.  Are we even an oriole now?

Friend of any sort.  My use of the word mate was a play on the concept from our dream, that's the term our 'mentor handiman' or whatever he is used for when we get slaughtered for someone else to gain what's currently our magic link.

Or a magic person can kill you and give your power to one of their mates."

I'd rather us switch roles with that magic person, so we need someone ready to recieve!

Will a hobo do?  Or, should we find someone else?

+1 to finding someone ready to receive magic. I think a human would be most useful to us.
