Kagusagi
Histories  of Love and War

Kagusagi are a race of bunny-eared people from the moon, along with some other stuff from the mod, loosely inspired by the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a classic Japanese tale. Since the is already Japanese-themed, I tossed in some other stuff such as yokai, origami, and beetle fights. So your oni slave can fight alongside a war stag beetle while holding an origami kanabo!

Features!

-A japanese-themed civilization of bunny-eared people! Ruled by immortal moon empresses who receive allowance from above, and inspire hope in their people!
-Brand new weapons - katanas (much better than western swords!), seven-branched shichishito, kanabo (an oni's favorite), matchlock muskets, throwing shurikens, and much more!
-New clothes - geta look at those awesome geta sandals! Also kimono, fundoshi, haori, happi, and other articles of Japanese clothing!
-New toys!
-Pets - fuzzy giant rabbits, giant beetles that love to fight, oni servants to fight your battles (totally not slaves though), shisa that you can train to fight evil, so much more!
-Non-pets - fire rats with extremely valuable fur, and flying cowries!
-Semi-mega beast - the jeweled dragon - an intelligent beast that breathes clouds of jade dust!
-New plants - bunny-eared spinach, beggar's bowl mushroom, reed bamboo (edible to pandas!), and the fabled jeweled tree!
-Origami - paper folding workshop that allows to turn sheets into nearly everything! Do you really want a paper war hammer though?

But wait, haven't I seen this before?

If you've been observing my work, you probably have. Some of the animals were first created for a story that never happened, then I repurposed them for the Kagusagi race included in my misc stuff mod. Then I realized that maybe that mod should focus more on wildlife, and Kagu don't really fit in. So, I ripped all Kagusagi-related stuff out, modernized it, fixed some bugs (5000 katanas from a single sheet of paper), updated the entity and text files, and... here we are!

"Usagi" is "rabbit", but what does "Kag" mean? Are the Kagusagi inspired by a certain pretty soldier who is guided by moonlight?

"Kagu" comes from Kaguya-hime, the princess from the moon from the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. The divine allowance of the hime caste references how the bamboo cutter would find gold nuggets in bamboo stalks as a compensation for caring for Kaguya.
There are other references to that story in the mod. The jeweled tree, the jeweled dragon, the winged cowry, the fire rat, and the beggar's bowl are all references to the five impossible tasks Kaguya would give to her suitors.

I just realized that reed bamboo would have to be grass to be consumed by pandas, but then it wouldn't be used by dwarves/Kagu. So pandas appear on maps with reed bamboo, but tame pandas will starve if no other type of bamboo is present. It would be a very quick fix, but it's kinda funny so I'm not gonna change anything.

The one thing that prevents me from publishing mods on Steam is graphics. I could make sprites, and I even know how to implement them, HOWEVER, it's not fun and feels like a chore.
The process of uploading mods to Steam also annoys me with how unnecessarily user-unfriendly it is.

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but could make Bunny Fortress a pre-requisite and code your creatures to use those graphics and cut its creatures. Make a palette file to recolor them for all your hair colors.

Shit guys, maybe I should

As I imagine them, Kagu are just people with bunny ears, so Bunny Fortress doesn't really work for me. Still, I may try something anyway. In fact...

I might have started something already. Fire rats and flying cowries so far; they are the only creatures in the non-pets file.

The rat I've tried generating with some shitty free AI. It came out alright, at least as far as these things go, so I turned it into a sprite and here it is. I could have just recolored the vanilla large rat, but I wanted something more original.

The cowry... I dunno. I don't like it very much.

Edit: Here's the tsuki-oni:

For civilized creatures it absolutely can feel like that, especially at present, though there *might* be a change coming along depending on how that palettizing thing goes.

I might pop this into my next ASCII game though, because I do like the idea of these poor bunny-eared people having to survive in a world full of nightmares and abominations.

I looked into civilized creatures graphics, and decided that it's not really worth it. I miss the times where it was just sprites for professions instead of clothes, weapons, portraits, pallettes and whatnot. Unnecessary bloat is what that is, and usually I'm a big fan of bloat, as some people may know.

So, there's not gonna be a steam version.
