why is there no guild for gelders?
« on: February 10, 2025, 08:39:38 pm »

does this important skill not deserve recognition? how can the master pass on their skill to the apprentice without a specialized environment for practice and demonstration?

If one can study such frivolous crafts as wax working or bee keeping then gelding deserves to be included in the Grand Guild Ledger. Surely.

But… but…

Gelding by trial and error is an important right of passage.  How can a dwarf geld if he has not been gelded himself?

A hammerer's guild or noble's guild would be more welcome in most forts...

This is a good suggestion!

I can't wait for the day when there are gelding demonstrations going on in their guild halls.

Excellent suggestion.

Brave Gelders risking their lives to stem the tide of cats need to be shown some respect.

I can't wait for the day when there are gelding demonstrations going on in their guild halls.

"I saw a gelding demonstration. That was very satisfying!"

When a dwarf of low gelding skill tries to geld an animal, there should be a chance that the animal attacks the gelder instead.

There already is... I've seen many migrant pets (cats, bunnies, and cavy boars mostly...) kicking gelders.

Interesting, I thought I’d heard that that was the case but, when I checked the wiki, it seemed to indicated that that wasn’t the case…

Almost every time my dorfs try to geld a cat they get shocked when the cat tries to attack them. Sometimes the cats even manage to scratch them.

(Also, I just remembered that Farmer's guilds sometimes have gelding demonstrations.)

It feels like it'd only be right if when the critter decided to attack the gelder that they go for the geldables.

Gelded creatures should also have a grudge against the gelder on their relationship screen.

Yeah, Gelders fall under the Farmer guildhall. https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Guildhall#Profession_Guildhalls
