Image 1: Welcome to the dungeons! As seen in year 157

Dungeonrooms, the Frozen Frontier (Steam Succession Fort)

Welcome to Dungeonrooms, the fortress of thieves. In the frozen taiga, at the edge of glacier, human blood rains from the skies in abundance. This was to be a place of punishment for the dwarves of the southern Manor of Girders, but something went wrong. Now the colony has become independent. Then more things went wrong.

Goblins came. Polar bear men of Stolenback showed their might. Corpse piles came to life, horse corpses slaying dwarves. And then came Nabrethakur. Skirtschampion.

Why are we here? Why was this fort founded again? Who is the Robber Baron? There might be some answers, or maybe it's been all lost to the snow.

A sloth man was sent to parley with the Robber Baron by the humans of Openpink, but then more things went wrong, and he wasn't seen again. Dakost the Holy Fiend set out to lock up all of the fort's enemies in the fabled Dungeons of Dungeonrooms, but more things went wrong, he got into a romance with an undead elf spy.

And the story of the fort is still ongoing. We, the sentenced ones, cover our faces with our head veils and clutch our well-worn scimitars, waiting with trepidation what the future will bring in the cursed frontier wastes.

When writing this post, this is the latest succession fortress that's being played at the succession-forts channel on BlindIrl's Discord server. This fort is still ongoing, hopefully for a while. If you want to play a turn, we can hopefully arrange that. For the most part, as with my earlier posts, the main goal here is to document the journey in a nice format for all to read.

Collecting the stories from the chat logs across months of gameplay, condensing them into a nice thread, and adding some info, new images and graphics if something was missing. Maybe doing some Legends mode digging as well to enhance the story

History and lore
Written by OttoK on 7.4.2024

The southern lands were brought under the heel of the Grand Alliance.

It was a massive coalition: the dwarves of the Manor of Girders, the Natural Flags of Trussing, and the Large Ropes had allied themselves with the other races: humans of the Bright Kingdoms, the Confederation of Pastimes and the Permanent Confederacy, as well as the elves of the Humid Beast, the Released Lark, the Primitive Thunders, the Earth of Locks and the Purple Crab.

Dungeonrooms was founded in year 150 as a penal colony. The Manor of Girders had decided to use their surplus of criminals and dissidents as a labor force for colonizing the far north for the Alliance. And so a fort was established in the land humans call Helheimr, where human blood falls from the skies. Cilob Salveverses, the man known as the “Robber Baron”, though his history is unknown, was chosen to be the prisoner in charge of the other prisoners.

A commanding man, rude and quick to anger, he was name-bonded with the queen, Cilob Ringcarry, who had gone to Galleybranded to meet with Atac the Gray Brute. But the dwarves of Reasonwheeled hadn’t heard back from the guards in over a year, and the nobles feared the worst. Had Dungeonrooms been usurped by the prisoners? There was word that malcontents from all over the kingdom were invited to settle in the north.

From the chat:

Otto_K — 4.4.2024
Hmm if we have new players i kinda wanna start a new fort. What do you think would that be a good idea?
Made more worlds with lots of good/evil and megabeasts, and tried some things

Holo — 6.4.2024
I'm game to do one. I'd prefer to start a new one, given the opportunity, but I'm happy to join in too.
I always tend to lean towards the most evil and inhospitable place I can get my hands on, but I am more than happy to play on any neat world we end up with.

Albreo — 6.4.2024
Maybe a thug fort? Unlock weird weapon schematics with DFhack. The entire army will be equipped with knives and no shield. Go rob people like crazy.

After rising up against the colonial guards and convincing them to desert their posts, the newly independent dwarves set out to carve the fortress Dungeonrooms into the stone and ice of the glacier. Everything from simple steel tools to underground pastures and farms was hastily put together to survive the endless winter. Nothing glorious, not even any artefacts were crafted.

The first battle was against a herd of muskoxen that got lost in the fort's corridors. Stone-and-wood cage traps were built and a pair of oxen captured. A pair of wild weasel women showed up, they were swallowing in despair. No surprise, really. A giant swan was in the sky, watching, always watching.

The first serious threat to the fort was a polar bear corpse. The Risky Barricade was sent to dispatch it. But as they attacked, they realized what a mighty opponent an undead polar bear could be.

They battered its body with strikes but it kept attacking. The militia commander, Mistêm Keletas - Metaljoined – had her arms and legs brutalized but continued to bite and latch onto the beast with her teeth. Nish Fortresswings was also injured. Finally, Edem Smithair crushed the bear's skull.

In the autumn, liaison Litast Runmirror traveled to the fortress with a caravan of merchants to demand answers: none were given that would satisfy the nobles home very much. Due to the tense situation and the lack of wealth in Dungeonrooms, no trading was able to take place.

Literally I forgot to craft anything to trade or even smooth gems. I wonder if Mistem will recover or die of infection… By the end of year, portion of the first cavern was fortified for dwarves to use, and water was pumped into a reservoir with an operational well. Even a couple bars of soap were made.

Thanks for reading, glad to hear there's excitement for the post!

This is my main contribution to the file, it's a multi-story tavern with rentable rooms and instruments and such.

I automated a decent bit of the work order process and added some new workshops, I also dug further down and accidentally hit an aquifer. I dug a trench for it to let it flow out of the map

We gained no migrants, but I made some good trades to improve our wealth for next year. Additionally, a child was born and a human joined us.

Whomever takes over next please be aware that the entrance door is currently unlocked, I have left it open for the sake of visitors to the Tavern. That being said, it's a dangerous place to live and sometimes undead show up

Bro what the fuck
What did they do to you man they cant be out here living like this

GeeFin — 10.4.2024
LUL  Are those beds placed there?

Holo — 10.4.2024
No dude there's no beds placed there at all I am so confused right now
Like, no wait there is, but

Everhything around them is stockpile
They're fucking hoarders

GeeFin — 10.4.2024
probably a full furniture stockpile or maybe a carpenter's workshop that was removed?

Holo — 10.4.2024
BRO STOP YOU'RE KILLING MY OCD
I like this shared door setup though. Respectable
I should mention I'm being dramatic on purpose, these things work just fine. It's just that I've never played on someone else's save before, so seeing something so completely different from my own style has been shocking to me

GeeFin — 10.4.2024

Where is this? Absolutely, a remote fort in the middle of nowhere. Currently not at war with anyone, so, we are relatively safe. After a preliminary assessment, the dorfs seem to be doing fine, apart from the large number of ducks and dogs which has to go somewhere. The caverns seem to be devoid of life. I wonder why? Can't even fish down there.

During the year, there are as many as 3 migrant waves. So, our population directly shot up to 66. A random dwarf also inherited the noble tile. The bedroom area has been expanded to accommodate all the new arrivals. The noble and mayor don't have proper bedrooms yet. New magma forges and smelters are now operational.

We are still short of steel and iron. The army has been set up with a light dual-wielding scimitar squad and a heavy human maul-wielding squad for beating the dead. I was going to let them wear a golden mask but we don't have any at the moment.

One dwarf failed the mood cus we have no green glass. The only sandbag I managed to buy was not enough as he wanted two. His slab is in the middle of engraving.

From the chat:

Albreo — 11.4.2024
Sad news, I can't add a dagger to the crafting receipt.  We have to make do with a scimitar.

Otto_K — 11.4.2024
Scimitars are pretty cool too. Hmm, could masks be added to the recipes?

Albreo — 11.4.2024
Metal/cloth mask, yeah.

Otto_K — 12.4.2024
What fluffy wambler doing there

Albreo — 12.4.2024
Rotten flesh is its favorite food.

Otto_K — 14.4.2024
So, who wants next turn?

Albreo — 14.4.2024
Probably no one. It will have to be you.

Note from the future:

So, if you’re wondering about the dates, we didn’t in fact play this fort through the summer. We sort of forgot about this fort and did something else for a few months.

Instead, we played a different world where each player creates a fortress for future adventurers to explore. Not an adventure succession in the true sense. Any adventuring isn’t part of the canon, but done on private saves or after enough of the successive player forts have been built.

This amounted to the fact that Dungeonrooms sat dormant until September, and thankfully, it managed to do a pretty successful comeback despite the hiatus.

Year 153
Written by OttoK on 11.9.2024

As I look around the fortress, refamiliarizing after the break and checking out the changes, I realize that the failed artefact dwarf that Albreo talked about had risen as undead. They put up quite a fight until their reanimated body was put down. It was decapitated but I don't know by who. A weaponsmith had a long fight against his severed neck (??). Also a weasel corpse was in the fort but a scimitar dwarf found it and put it down before any nastiness.

Snatchers arrive as the squads go bird hunting. We must protect the fort from foul avians and goblins both! The first giant grackle is swiftly put down. Hopefully they don't instantly reanimate and wreck the fort...

It's time to start thiefing! The Incinerated Paddles were sent to the fancy fortress of Canyonfreckles in the south. Only problem? The lords of the fortress, the Natural Flags of Trussing, are our allies. The mountainhomes will not be happy if they found out - but, nobody saw us enter or leave the fortress. Many books of great writing were procured. Maybe now this fort will be known as more than a den of illiterate, uncultured savages.

The Lemon of Towns is a bustling tavern where dwarves and visitors frequently come to dance elaborate dances. But the drink is too much for some, and Dumed Rhytmiccanyons, chief medical dwarf, was beaten up by the drunkard huntsman, Kib Amidlogem.

Image 2: Kib the drunken hunter

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Image 3: The heist of Canyonfreckles

The humans came to negotiate for trade: the high keeper of the seal, to be specific, from Rogonpesor, the Famous Confederacies. Feb Dunesiron, the duchess of Echorough, met the statesman in the icy mess hall. Besmar Vaultgoals, the fort's mayor, observed the exchange over her meal. Soon after the seal keeper finished the talks, some human merchants arrived. We bought some foodstuffs, seeds and wines, mostly.

There’s commotion, the scimitar-wielding squad is back from a raid that really didn't go according to plan... There's a goblin fort right next to us, with 75 inhabitants. That can't be dangerous to pillage, right? Wrong. Nobody told us that there was 28 polar bear men living with the goblins. Kib the drunk hunter was killed by polar bear women, as well as Athel Weavermined and Vabok Roughtrail.

Image 5: In Dungeonrooms, the taming of the local wildlife is underway: now we have a giant weasel, a giant grackle, and two giant muskoxen

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Image 6: Our local lake is filled with amphibian-folk who ambush our patrol. Olin Murkwall the Seal of Rust, survivor of Stolenback, immediately decapitates one. Monom Crystalbinds leads the charge to the water

Ah, the famous dungeons of Dungeonrooms are being carved into the stone. Once planned as detention cells for the penal colony, now they'll be built to house the fort's many enemies. Oddom Koganar the master clothier has no skill as an investigator, but the foolish spies crack immediately under his flimsy threats. A snake crime boss and a night stalker underling were caught, and another lizard man boss received a beating from Koganar.

A cyclops was caught in a cage trap, and an ettin was confronted by the thief squad and the axe-wielding baroness Feb Dunesiron. Rith Praisedtheater got the kill.

We got a barony of our own, in addition to housing the countess of Echorough, and also the first hillocks to the south of us. Other than that, the fortress seems to be running well. Steel production was slow but it should be going alright now. The nobles and admins want better rooms. The next caravan will bring us more leather, and in general i don't think we're running out of anything.

Image 1: The new tavern floor

Edirmosus, Dungeonrooms
Year 154
Written by Cade on 19.9.2024

Part 1: Chaos
The fortress was in a state of chaos when I arrived. Goblin thieves, monsters at the gates, and bloodthirsty amphibian cave people all seek the destruction of our fortress. The proverbial cherry on top is the unidentified necromancer... I suspect them all to be related.

I was introduced to the "Robber Baron" of Dungeonrooms, and we held a meeting on how we can best please our Count and further our standing in the monarchy. We devised a simple 3 step plan to ensure Dungeonrooms would prosper.

Step 1 being introducing these Godless dwarves to the faiths of our people. I caught a couple laborers praying in a stockpile and I couldn't help but shake my head. I immediately approved the construction of 6 temples and 4 shrines. I also made the order of a proper grand tavern to be built. If we are to survive in this frozen, cutthroat wasteland we will need somewhere warm to drink and make merry.

I suspect the constructions to be complete by the summer. I will write to the mountain home when I have more to report but for now, Dungeonrooms is no longer hanging on by a thread.

Image 2: Stukos brought me a set of greaves made from the amphibian invaders bone!! Komanrinal, the Spread Ivy

Part 2: Labor

The dwarves have been working hard through the spring, despite there being a mutual feeling of unhappiness in the fort. A group came up to me and demanded that their faith gets their own temple and a priest appointed.

I granted the request immediately, it seems step 1 of my plan may be the only step I get to, but I am dedicated to improving the lives of any dwarf who lives in Dungeonrooms. The journey here is treacherous enough, it must be worth it or no one will ever stay.

I've made plans to incorporate a ventilation system to deal with the miasma constantly floating around the main staircase. Wait.. Why is everyone fighting?

I have commissioned the miners and builders to construct a new housing district for the dwarves who showed up during the construction of the taver, below the finished tavern.

Housing district now complete, now have assigned dwarves to smoothing and engraving the fortress. Must make note of how happy the dwarves have seemed as of late despite the hostile wildlife. Things seem to be getting brighter around here

Part 3: Death

I can't help but to feel relieved to have left Dungeonrooms. When I first arrived the experience of the swordsmen guarding our doors gave me a lot of confidence. They beat off a band of thieves and stood constantly at the entrance. We built, and smoothed, and crafted.

I inherited a fortress with so many unhappy dwarves I feared for my life at times. I had the dwarves down to only about 5-10 unhappy dwarves. We flourished. They loved their new bedrooms and temples and their grand tavern. Little did I know living here would prove to be a cruel challenge. I am too shaken up to tell you what I've seen or anyone. As soon as the nobles room was finished it was spring and I made my exit without saying goodbye to anyone.

It was impossible to trust them anymore. They stopped giving me reports from the surface when frozen blood constantly rained on the surface. It was never ending. It usually would come to a stop for a short while at the least but it was unrelenting. Keeping our dwarves in the fort was the only option but it crippled us. When the ettin came, our elite soldiers were naught but inexperienced boys when incapacitated with surface sickness.

The ettin killed a few, but it was what came next that chills me so. I cannot repeat what I saw but I can offer guidance to whatever poor soul comes after me. Use the steel. Don't trust anyone, not even the dead. And my final piece of advice would be to leave. I wish I had.

Tell the mountain home I lost my mind and have renounced my status. Tell them I ran into the wilderness. The truth is far darker but I'll not burden you with that. I leave this scroll only out of moral obligation that it may save your life and maybe you can save this fortress. Farewell my friend, may your steel be sharp

Image 1: The Thieves' Den

Edirmosus, Dungeonrooms
Year 155
Written by HimGoFast on 30.9.2024

H.G. Fast: backstory..

H.G. Fast was a sloth man from Goldworth, appointed as warden by the mountainhome following the events of late-winter y154. The criminals here are not keen on the idea of a sloth man taking control of the fortress. The Robber Baron Cilob in particular is growing jealous.. though he has chosen to play ball in order to quell suspicions from the mountainhome of their treason. Tensions between the criminals and their warden H.G. Fast are rising.. We're not sure how much longer their rule here may last..

(I think of HG FAST like Ms. Trunchbull… A prison warden… Or a distasteful government leader appointed to fix the criminals' severance from the mountainhome, on a fast track to being overthrown and hung. At year end, the robber baron and their citizens will mutiny, hanging the warden and officially severing from the mountainhome. Maybe alternatively they manage to keep things under wraps… haven't gotten there yet this doesn't have to be cannon)

Image 2: H.G. Fast, the sloth man overseer / prisoner

Overseer's Log

H.G. Fast's Log, 1st Granite, Early Spring y155

"This fortress is a warzone, and reeks of the dead! As instructed by the Humans of Openpink, I managed to enter our mountainhome via a secret entrace on the other side of The Waters of Stasis. Deep within the fortress I found myself surrounded by battered and broken dwarves, desperately hanging on my every word.. though perhaps in a mocking fashion.. They're reffering to me as overseer, and seem to think I can save them from the scourge.. The baron here has given me a scroll clarifying the events of the last year..

I suppose there will have to be some changes around here. A part of me wishes to return to Goldworth.. but someone has to whip these ne'er-do-wells back into submission"

H.G. Fast's Log, 14th Granite, Early Spring y155

"A fortnight ago, we were attacked by the undead. In a fit of panic our marauders retreated within the fortress, locking the gates behind them… and leaving behind Aco and Fath.. Such cowardice! I have requested Aco and Fath (Rigothdeg) be commemorated for their heroism.

The cowardly squad of marauders have been reprimanded accordingly, and a new training schedule has been implemented for a new squad of marauders known as "Skull Crushers". I've begun planning a vault deep below the library to store our most prized spoils."

(justifying my RP blunders lol)

(Only death so far has been Aco. Fath Rigothdeg is, in fact, still alive on the surface, they've been running from a cyclops along with about 25-30 undead units for days... though our dwarves do not realize this, he's quite the survivalist.)

To Do:
-vault underneath/connected to library (thieves guild of sorts)
-create an airlock system for trade depot
-send thieves on thieving missions

H.G. Fast's Log, 7th Slate, Mid Spring y155

"In just the nick of time, reinforcements have arrived! 23 dwarves from the mountainhome. I am relieved to hear they found Fath, and confirmed Aco's death. The Ettin on the surface is no more, thanks to *redacted*. No lives had to be lost... thank the gods.

Construction on the vault continues. Many are still reeling from the events of Late-Winter 154.. a few here don't seem to be handling the pressure very well. Despite this, labours have been appropriately re-assigned, coke is being processed, our squads continue training

Too few humans remain for effective maul squad; using a temporary squad of 5 dwarves known as skull-crushers for undead defense during y155, and our prisoners have been stripped and locked away. This means we can finally resume the capturing of invaders, and venture back out into the world.."

Image 3: Fath Rigothdeg, father of the countess. He seems to have been badly injured but still doing alright  (seen in year 160)

H.G. Fast's Log, 1st Malachite, Midsummer y155

“Migrants arrive yet again… along with a forgotten beast in the 2nd cavern layer known as Aspad Ustru. A huge feathered crab! has a knobby shell… squirms… fidgets. Its feathers are ecru and fluffed-out. Shoots Webs. (kills Nawara Lerineinevi in the caves amidst the fighting on the surface. Aspad is badly burned in the fight.. but survives)

In order to get the migrants into our fortress, we have to open the doors and breathe the sordid air once more. our 5 dwarven skullcrushers and the 2 humans that remain of our marauders brace the gate.

Bomrek Lolokes is the first to meet the dead. Kib Zozlogem's right lower arm didn't stand a chance, of course.

Of the new migrants, Thob the milker collides with an undead goblin from the siege of Hematite 3. Alath the mechanic rushes in to rescue, along with a human mace-wielder Kanil Lalcilsmoma. The human punches the goblin corpse in the... finger? this is a killing blow.

Thob and Zan perish. Our mechanic, Alath, is left behind.”

Final log entry
With distinctly different hand-writing...

"After learning that I was to serve as the next overseer of Dungeonrooms, I've been briefed in the goings-on of the fortress... and also the dwarves told me about the sudden and inexplicable death of the previous overseer. Count Cilob was adamant in telling me that H.G. Fast's death was an accident, but I spotted some fresh-looking sloth man blood in his clothes.

Oh well, surely there's nothing sinister to it. Life can be dangerous in Dungeonrooms..."

Edirmosus, Dungeonrooms
Year 154
Written by Cade on 19.9.2024

Historical analysis of Year 154 in Dungeonrooms
Written by Otto_K in 20.9.2024

I will attempt to reconstruct the events of this harrowing year through the second-hand recounting of events that have passed into legend, so please excuse any inaccuracies.

It appears like goblins attacked at spring, and were fought back. A couple of them reanimated, and the zombie Matchdangle killed Asob Blottedoars, one of the original settlers. Nooo... Mistem Keletas, who was wounded badly in the first year and now works as a bard in the tavern and as a carpenter... She had a romance with Asob. Rip

Looks like Asob's reanimated hand, who was named Hairtreasure, then killed Zutthan Gravelcat. Asob and the goblins continued to reanimate throughout the spring and summer.

The fort's pastures were infiltrated by one or several animal people; our giant grackle pet was slaughtered by... a stoat man, Douseddaubs? What the heck is a stoat man? Looks like our grizzly bear killed the creature. Our animals are fighting each other, too.

Kogsak Fortuneinks was killed by a zombie dog in the autumn. Nil Evenedbell by a zombie muskox at winter. Several zombie muskox did arise, and I'm surprised that they didn't wreck the fort, because they're big creatures...

Image 2: Reanimations plague the fort

Image 3: Oh, that’s a stoat man

At winter, the stoat man reanimated as the zombie stoat man 'Tiredowned' and killed Oddom Boatfleshy and Ber Boltsfolded. More reanimations ensue, of Oddom, Nil and others. There's also reports of amphibian man zombies, and fishman corpses spotted in the garbage heap / open graveyard, so it seems the cavern people continued their raids.

To this faltering fortress came Musar Wondrousdesserts the Festive Brain, the female ettin. She must have come to finish us off and steal any artefacts the fort holds. She almost succeeded, but not in the expected way. She killed Tobul Depthtongs and Iden Bellquake, before the scimitar-wielding Sodel Ectoplanks was able to end her onslaught.

And that's just when things got interesting. The ettin corpse, known as Nabrethakur - Skirtschampion, the Lacy Flower, had arisen. I'm not even going to paraphrase the slaughter, but this image should tell everything you need to know... FIFTEEN dwarves fallen to this one undead creature.

In the end, Militia captain Ineth Möruludar finally defeated the monster. Now would come the time to honor the dead (while they try to kill you) and try to heal from this calamity.

amazingly written!! Someone who can articulate my pain 😂  Honestly I wouldn't consider my turn a success. I learned there are a lot of mechanics I just don't really know about but ig thats part of the fun of succession forts

It's part of the fun, and the years of chaos are often my favorites
