Can't figure out why my dwarves won't bury their dead
« on: February 03, 2025, 12:36:01 pm »

Hi folks. I've googled and posted in multiple places, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why dwarves simple refuse to bury the remains of anyone.

Screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/Jp6hbPL

I have coffins placed and a tomb for each coffin.

It is set to "allow burial."

Each coffin is auto-assigned to a dead dwarf (ie, their names are on the caskets but their bodies are not inside)

Every member of the fortress has hauling ON, which includes burial & refuse

I also created a separate job of JUST burial, which is ON for all dwarves.

Workers are NOT set to "Ignore Refuse"

Workers are NOT doing higher priority jobs. Most of them are just praying in the temple when not assigned to cook or craft.

Names of dead dwarves are NOT showing up in the Dead/Missing tab

I have tried placing Tombs first and then coffins, and coffins first and then assigning a tomb. Same result.

Other clues:

Workers are regularly cooking and crafting, but have also STOPPED:

Planting

Picking up items (boulders) designated as trash

I'm baffled, and I honestly feel like I need to understand this system before continuing the game.

It sounds like your dwarfs cannot travel freely, because your tombs auto-assigned those burials which means they were set-up correctly, and the jobs to haul corpses to those tombs would have triggered automatically with the default Labor settings.

Check for up/down-stairs that were accidentally turned into a down-stairs, or a unusable ramp where the supporting wall was dug out, or  workshop with "solid" tiles that was built and is now blocking traffic. If you find something blocking traffic and fix it, you may need to reverse some changes in the labor settings to get everything going again.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

You have a dwarf assigned to mining and hunting, that's probably the cause of most of your problems.
