What's the attack skill for a thrown item? Is it purely strength and agility?

Is it possible to get fortress mode dwarves to use thrown items/weapons, or is it only possible in adventure mode right now?

There is a skill for throwing.

Your dwarves only throw when they tantrum.

If you wanted to make thrown items in fortress mode you could modify a crossbow to have a different name to give the illusion that it is a thrown weapon (but it is really still using the crossbow skill).

An example would be:

[NAME:throwing knife:throwing knives]
[DAMAGE:65:PIERCE]
[WEIGHT:30]
[SKILL:SWORD]
[RANGED:CROSSBOW:BOLT]

[MINIMUM_SIZE:5]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:3]

[ITEM_AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_KNIFE]
[NAME:thrown knife:thrown knives]
[CLASS:BOLT]
[DAMAGE:100:PIERCE]

Flavour's the right word. A bit of flour and water.. seasoning of different gravels.. and just bake/smelt that right up...

Actually, if you mod in the [FIREBREATH] tag to your dwarves, they will train the throwing skill whenever they hurl a fireball.  This is, of course, awesome.  You can train up a squad of champion firethrowers.
