the spinning bb round hits jack johnson, scumbag in the lower body!
it is pierced through entirely!
his right kidney has been poked out!
his liver has been mangled!

jack johnson, raider has been shot and killed.

The above (including bbcode) neatly weighs in at 255 characters. Fallout meets DF

a.k.a. "Evil Genius", innit? True, only a dumbed-down 2d version, not nearly as lovingly detailed as DF, but like Sims it has an interface and the sort of fully 3D graphics that would probably kill DF.

[With that last sentence I meant: I'm not sure if detailed 3D graphics would make DF better or worse. As is, anyone can imagine their dwarf's visuals and give the ASCII character meaning -- more explicitly designing each dwarf reduces this "signifying work" done by the player's brain.
(In DF, we both look at ASCII characters. For me, they may be Disney's Snow White Dwarves; for you, sorta stunted Conan type mini barbarians; and for someone else they might resemble the adult remake of Snow White and the seven dwarves ... so we play one game, and there's a hundred different ways we can fill it with life. In a game with a very specific graphical style such as EG, much of the "meanings" we add to DF are already assigned to characters through the visual styling etc. I have a suspicion that it is DF's lack of graphics, to some extent, that makes it so compelling to play.
(But then, I'm too tired for fancy theories. Since leaving work yesterday i've played 4 hours of EG, 5 hours of DG, slept for 3 hours, showered and went back to my desk ...)

maybe its time for Today to open a cafe press storefront and sell mugs with a purple dwarf head icon on a black background.

They sell loincloths, too, so the dwarf head could be tastefully arranged on one.

just wait. Once you turn on Sims3 for the first time, one of your characters will be eaten by a carp.

I remember playing the first The Sims game (as well as original SimCity for the Macintosh... in black and white...) and the Sims can play on a computer. Whatcha wanna bet there'll be a computer available in Sims 3 that has a tiny animation attached to it of an @ symbol fighting an & symbol?  :D

It's the natural course of evolution!

Nethack on a PDA is awesome, incidentally.

Of all companies though, why Maxis? Electronic Arts has thoroughly gutted that institution and all that remains is a rotten husk of when it produced titles like SimCity 2000, and the original -sims.

Among the people I know, we describe DF as basically SimDwarf.  It's not exactly a stretch.

To make a dwarf in a 3d version behave like you would want it to you would have to have a AI/Rendering/Animation coder working full time for the same amount of time Toady has right now.

I wouldn't mind unique images for all the tiles, and a possibility to rebind keys in a easy way. But not if it takes focus over more important parts. A new GUI won't add anything to the game, just polish existing stuff, and I want new ways to get dwarf high. :P
