This isn't a random quote. Just an idea I've recently had.

Right now, I've a template for 80 variants of "magic" weaponry, total of 8 prefixes and 8 suffixes (8x8=64, +8+8 for the single-prefix/suffix variants). Needless to say, even two weapons modded in such a way take quite a lot of space (80 entries each... ouch.). So, is it entirely practical (or useful at all) to expand this mod further?

I was going to include it as a "secret addition" to the Martial Arts mod, but it's clearly too much work for something that's quite possibly of no practical use.
Also, with there being no way to define availability of weapons (or indeed, their cost), the "usual" weapons become more rare than full sets of artifact adamantine armor.

Alright, I've finished the 8 weapon types I initially planned.

I'll make a "test" release, like a proof of concept.
There's no entity file bundled, but a list of all weapons with proper tags for copypasting into a civ has been included. Remember, it's 640 weapons.

How do you get a prefix? Is it made out of demonic aluminium? Any weapons I've made have had the material listed first ie "steel demonic scepter"

A prefix is an [ADJECTIVE:]. The only use of it in vanilla DF is "large Iron daggers" carried by kobolds. Trapcomps also use it extensively.

But still, what of the mod? Anybody think it might be interesting?

I think it could be a neat addition to the game. Although I think it would be good if they were somewhat rare. Maybe give them to "guardians" kinda like your shard shields.

At least 8 weapons...  80 entries each...  640 weapons. I'm half done with them btw, but I find it hard to believe that I'll be able to make a use for them...

Guardians, huh?

I guess that treasure chest mod could probably work...  Or just a race of extraplanars...

Make a creature like "mimic" in dnd - a chest with treasures who kills treasure hunters. Give it low speed but good damage reflection (maybe flamebreath too like magic missile to get rid of archers/throwers?).
Make it a rare creature and tie all your cool artifacts to its itemcorpse.

Just an idea.

And please finish this part of mod, it's great.

Alright, I'm continuing along.

I've done short and long swords, spears, maces, warhammers, and battle axes so far. Had to make some modifications to some of the suffixes because of different initial weapon properties, so there's more total additions, but still 80 variants per weapon.

Some of the stuff is a bit awkward (just no way to make two different damage types in one weapon), but most of it is fairly balanced. Not for adventure mode, because prices are only material-dependent, but in forts you'll have to get a lot more materials to make those things.

As much as necessary to attract attention, I guess.  :)

And yeah, mostly it's just damage increases (and decreases), and different damage types, but there's also weight, critical boost, and stick chance. And a cool name to boot. I could make even more pref/suf combos, but this is alsmost too much as it is.

Would it be too much of a spoiler to post all the prefixes and suffixes and their effects? I'm not sure I could do balance without some smart program to make a database of items from the raws (and alter them by bulk), but I could accept some suggestions at least...

The guardians idea won't work. The game always chooses the last item of the itemcorpse entries.

Alright, I've put the mod up....

It has the following weapons:

shortsword
longsword
spear
pike
battle axe
war hammer
flanged mace
whip

Whips turned out to be rather useless on most occasions, except cool stuff like a Fierce whip of Legend that almost quadruples the base damage, and a Fierce Whip of Swift Death that triples it, and adds a major critboost to that. The inability to add more than one damage type hurt whips the most. The most useless weapon is a Weak whip of Misfortune that has 1 damage and has a 10% stick chance... Good for training though, I suppose...

You can define rarity in entity_default.txt. Also, you can do something weird... such as taking the [SHARP] tag off of obsidian and adding to to some kind of magic stone you add. Then just stick [CAN_STONE] on all your weapons.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Magic stone is, well, stupid. It will add nothing except a name that I can already achieve with prefixes. And it will not have the varied properties of metals.

And rarity tags don't work on weapons, only armor. Same as the value tags...
