You did notice that this ended about a month ago, right? Anyway, I haven't noticed many people with image signatures, but I don't know if this is just from generally low interest in them or low knowledge of the opt-in preference. (I would say more the former, since I have gotten several compliments on mine.)

I'd vote for several lines of text and no images...if I knew how to.

Images in signatures are excellent for fora which are status oriented and put a high value on creative artwork and/or creative plagiarism.

DF artwork that bags status tends to be of the ASCII variety, while other more elaborate art can be better posted as links or images in a post anyhow.

Those are my 2 dwarfbucks.
 
Many fora give the option to limit signatures to the first post of a member in a thread, IIRC when the thread is initiated. But sometimes also in memberprofile-preferences.
Haven't checked what this forum allows as I'm not much for signatures.
