I just had what I consider to be the worst and most embarrassing death that I've ever had in ADOM. No, not something silly that lots of newbies have problems with, like food, forgetting you can pray, or anything like that. No, friends, I hit a teleport trap and landed in this room:

Needless to say, being a trollish monk at level 7, I had no way out. I did have a wand of monster creation, which may have given me a corpse that would give me teleportitis, but no such luck.

I ended up pissing off my god so he would strike me down rather than starve to death... I ended up with -12k points

I didn't even know rooms like that existed.  Isn't there usually a hidden door somewhere?

Nethack has those, but there is a guard who shows up to let you out (on the condition you drop all your gold).

I'll bet you a pair of clean socks there's a hidden door in the west wall. I guess we'll never know now though...

My favorite (and then also the best) character ever was a gnomish bard called Polk, he was level 21, had a sword of sharpness, could kill opposing creatures with ease and was just great in every way. I had beaten the pyramid and I was continuing down CoC. I got through the Animated forest and met Khelavaster for the first time. I had an amulet of life saving (2, in fact),while talking to him I understood I should give one to old Khela, but I couldn't give it to him anymore after I started talking.  Then I got to the level with all the corpses lying around. I walked around munching all the nice looking corpses (Ogres, Yum.) Then I got to the center, where I saw something I thought was a ghoul or some other easy undead creature. I went next to it and hit it. Then the creature shrieked, turned out to be a banshee and caused my heart to explode.

I had two sets of earplugs that I knew I could use at some point, because I had heard a bit about the banshee. I had the two amulets of life saving, but neither was around my neck, because I didn't feel threatened. Later someone pointed out to me that he couldn't think of anything more threatening than a level filled with corpses died from an unknown reason with only one living creature in the middle of it.  I completely agree now.

After a long time I finally got a character who made it to the damn banshee and I got my revenge.

And to other folks - the Nesoo told he's not a newbie so hidden door shouldn't be his peroblem, it's obviously.
I haven't played ADOM for a long time but as far as I remember there were hidden rooms full of rewards which were enclosed.
At least I saw such chamber in the dwarven city.

This thread made me finally decide to try ADOM.  I love this character creation system, but it seems pretty in-depth, are there a lot of YASDs?  I can see getting frustrated if I spend all this time deciding a guy's history only to die five minutes later and have to do it again.

Yeah the first characters will die pretty fast, very unforgiving game. The worst part is that without some foreknowledge its almost impossible to avoid death in some part of the game, you almost HAVE to metagame...

I prefer Crawl stone soup (http://crawl-ref.sourceforge.net/), everything is randomly generated and most things can be learned pretty fast from playing, you then have only yourself to blame for YASD...

Nethack's like that too.  I couldn't get past level 4 until I read the spoilers.  I mean how are we supposed to know some of these things?!

But yeah, I think NetHack was designed for the sharing of spoilers. Being made on UseNET and all, I can imagine a major release coming out, being eaten up by everyone and spoilers being shared rapidly amongst them. Probably half the fun at the time; popping up to tell people about some new horrible trick the developers put in.

Argh, danged back injury kept me away from the PC for a few days, sorry for the slow reply.

For those new to ADOM (forgot to link it in the opening post...), it's almost essential to have the unofficial guidebook, though it obviously contains massive spoilers. I think the page I use the most is the monster appendix, so I know what a corpse will do to me if I eat it.

I got teleported into a royal treasury (search for "0.13.14"). AFAIK, there is no way out. There was a guard there, who I killed, and the room was full of gold, so at least I died rich... Maybe, if it ever happens again, I can try dropping all my gold to see if he'll teleport me out like McDoomHammer says they do in NetHack.
