Dwarves not hauling metal

I've just made a stockpile for metal bars. None of the dwarves (even the ones with no job) seem to want to haul them even if they have all hauling jobs on. it seems there are no jobs to haul metal bars (when I press j). Is this a bug? if no, how do i get them to haul metal bars and stop my workshops from cluttering up?
