World editor - elev/rain/temp/drain biome values
« on: July 15, 2008, 06:06:36 pm »

Hello again.

Since it took me some time to figure these out, im posting them for everyone to save their time. Biome names are taken from wiki by comparing with map legend from here: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Map_legend , although there seem to be some discrepancies.

Sav and Volc are irrelevant to biomes in world editor.

By elevation:

  Water
Elevation: 1 - 99

  Low Mountain
Elevation: 300 - 332

  Mountain
Elevation: 333 - 365

  High mountain
Elevation: 366 - 400

Everything else
Elevation: 100 - 299

By rain/drain:

  Hill
Rain: 10 - 66
Drain: 50 - 100

  Sand Desert
Rain: 0-9
Drain: 0-32

  Rock Desert
Rain: 0-9
Drain: 33-49

  Desert Badlands A
Rain: 0-9
Drain: 50 - 65

  Desert Badlands B
Rain: 0-9
Drain: 66 - 100

Second Desert Badlands biome (per wiki), occupying higher drain areas

  Grassland
Rain: 10-19
Drain: 0-49

  Savanna
Rain: 20-32
Drain: 0-49

  Marsh
Rain: 33-65
Drain: 0-32

The character is darker than marsh in wiki map legend and matches that of a swamp instead, but on wiki both marsh and savanna have the same characters, so im guessing this one actually is marsh.

  Shrubland
Rain: 33-65
Drain: 33-49

  Swamp
Rain: 66-100
Drain: 0-32

  Forest
(conifer icon, probably means temperate)
Rain: 66-100
Drain: 33-100

Forest becomes Broadleaf in high temperatures, which makes it the only biome in world editor that is dependant on temperature. Im guessing that the character for Conifer actually serves for temperate conifer and broadleaf, and the broadleaf icon means tropical broadleaf forest, because thats what the rain/temp/drain stats suggest, and otherwise there would be no differentiation between temperate and tropical.

  Forest
(broadleaf icon, probably means tropical)
Temperature: ~ 60-75 (varies a bit for different drain values)

Sweet! Now if you can figure out what makes something into an aquifer I'll be able to make some perfect worlds.
...
Or I can be lazy and wait for someone else to do so, but you've still given me some nicely quantitative data. So, again, sweet!

What goes into the 10-65 rain, 50-100 drain area? I doodled out a graph of the biomes and noticed this area is empty.

That'll give you hills of various sorts, which use the grassland-savanna-shrubland biomes for creature placement.

Aquifier is a property of certain layers, and those are generated randomly. Well, maybe there is some relation between biomes and layers that they contain (or between elev/temp/drain etc values and layers), but still, i think its nigh impossible to figure this out by experimenting with world generation.

That'll give you hills of various sorts, which use the grassland-savanna-shrubland biomes for creature placement.
Yup, in world editor its just a plain green hill. Its up there on the list, before sand desert.

Toady: Would it be too much to ask for some more definite and specific biome stats?

Great job, Kaelis Asur!

How does savagery affect biomes?

It doesn't. It just turns the regular biomes more savage.

Anybody know the temp/drain/rain combinations for glacier and tundra biomes?

Also, will setting erosion cycles to 0 and turning erosion of extreme cliffs off lead to perfectly straight cliff faces from the ground to the peaks?

So, a thought occurs.
In the advanced parameters screen you can apply "weight" to certain ranges in order to get a world closer to what you're looking for, etc., etc. But if the minimum height for a mountain biome is 300, but the maximum range that you can apply weight to is 100, then something is weird.
All of the ranges have a maximum of 100, so I guess that means that this is a percentage of the range between your minimum and maximum values. I'd complain about the extra step of figuring this out, but then again DF is already complex enough that it shouldn't bug me.

I tried messing with the settings- glacier needs somewhere around 0 temperature. In order to get that, you need to change the minimum temp in the first screen, not the painter screen. After that, the difference between Glacier and Tundra seems to involve rainfall and drainage.

Anyone know why this keeps cropping up in the reject log:

I keep getting "armor rack" areas, what is it? Also, what's the brown color of tiles?

It's a little harder to get at tundra and glacier, because temperature changes with elevation and latitude.  You need the peak adjusted summer temperature to be less than or equal to -5 I think.

The armor stand symbols should be badlands, the high drainage deserts.

It means they're aren't enough areas for dwarves to settle in. Needs more mountains, I guess.
