The underwater fortress seems like a particularly interesting thing to try.  I have no idea how I'd do it, but I'd like to set it up so that I can see whales and other deep sea creatures swim past the clear glass walls.

Does anyone know if the underwater fortress idea will actually be do-able in the new version? I've seen some really awesome ideas to try in the new version, but that has to be one of the coolest. Whales and stuff swimming by your windows would be amazing  :D

As far as I know, building the ceiling was the only thing mentioned that might be a hindrance and then someone mentioned making ceilings with bridges (I didn't think of that).  So, perhaps we can use bridges and tantruming dwarves will cause   floods to the fortress.    :D

The first thing I'm going to do is generate a fresh set of 10 pre-generated worlds for my website.

After that... I dunno.  Maybe get some sleep.  I sometimes hear good things about going outside.

You, sir, are no true dwarf. Although it is very dwarven of you to take a nap when something exciting is happening. Also: island fortress ftw. Too bad we can't go whaling yet.

if you want to build a roof, you have to go about it smart, and leave a solid layer of rock ontop if you start building underground. If you start above ground simple make a small side stairwell to get ontp and rewall the corect parts, moving bridges in and out as needed, until a whole layer is rewalled.

I plan on finding every exploitable feature and game mechanic so I can build  really good fort. Magma flood of drawbridge death will have nothing on what is soon to come. Magma fountains, pits, steam cannon and some others that I can't remember right now.

I've been under the impression that normally dwarves and water don't mix? A dwarf is about as likely to go for a swim as they are to climb on a horse (never). Although I imagine they wouldn't mind if they were safe and dry on the other side of the glass. Of course dwarves are also stubborn and will go to great lengths to prove themselves; which could imply building a fortress with the greatest (read: only) underwater viewing station in all the lands.

NOTE: UNDERSEA OBSERVATION WINDOWS AND TANTRUMING DWARVES DON'T MIX!
ANOTHER NOTE: DWARVES SINK!

Hopefully it would be possible to design a system to mitigate your damages in this event, pump the water out, and salvage the room.

I imagine a large number of smaller, modular rooms near the edge of the underwater fortress with large central rooms that are disconnected from the drink by the x,y-axis.  The clear glass vulnerable ceiling, created for aesthetics, could be made unreachable by removing the ramps used in its construction.

Legend:
# clear glass wall
% clear glass window
- lowered draw bridge
+ door
X workshop
> stairs up
< stairs down
O hole in the floor
$ screw-pump from above
S shark

code:

   --S----
   ##%%%##
----#O $ >#----
#%%## XXX ##%%#
+     XXX     +
#%%## XXX ##%%#
----#< $ O#----
   ##%%%##
   -------

The idea is that the holes in the floor drain the water into a room below, buying my dwarves enough time to seal off the room with the drawbridge level and pump the water out of the room with the screw-pump.

ADDED:

I haven't thought too much about where the pumped water would go but perhaps it could be routed using a network of flood gates to either a farm or an underwater chasm (if such a thing exists).

Hmmm with underwater forts it might be an idea to stick floodgates outside the windows. That way should you need to you can simply seal off any breaches.

Yes, except if I die of excitement.

2) Praise Armok.
3) Blow off any upcoming obligations, perhaps I should get started on this one now.

I'm going to see if I can reroute the cave river, and if by blocking its options make it flow uphill.
