Because It's There, A Climbing Contest
« on: July 24, 2008, 04:37:22 pm »

Alright, climbing contest is official.

The goal:  Be the first adventurer in DF history to summit a mountain.  Bonus points if you leave an object engraved with your civ symbol at the top.  Double bonus points if you can reach the bottom and retire your adventurer in a town.

The target.

The rules:(If you have an idea for a rule, or a complaint about a rule, post it)

1.  No third-party tools can be used to heal, provide food/water, travel, or fight monsters.
2.  No savescumming unless savescummed character is off the mountain.
3.  No flying races.  If people want, there could be a required race for the contest.
4.  I think that's all we really need, like I said, say something if you know of something else we need.

I'm game, but how do we know what the true peak is?

Small would be good.  This sounds great, I'venever made a real overland trek before.

I plan on getting a second backpack and filling it with water.

EDIT: The true peak is the Named Tile.  I don't actually know if adventure mode announces when you get there, but checking the map would do it.  Or just take note when there's no where higher to go.

Mountains may have sloped sides, but don't they still have cliffs multiple levels high? While this challenge does sound interesting, it also sounds like it would be incredibly difficult to achieve. That said, I think it would be a great challenge (And makes me feel like the lack of oxygen should be programmed in).

To me, it feels like the best way to do this would be on a pocket map and then actually upload the save file. A small map with some mountain on it means you are less likely to meet resistance on the way as you will probably find a suitable mountain closer to your start point.

I'm also intrigued to see if someone would do a roleplayed diary about this.

I found a possible peak on a small world.

The real danger here is going to be chasms, tributaries can be massive, and it could be a serious timewaster finding a way across, and if you run into chasm creatures you could easily be knocked off.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's only part of the map, so the pic isn't too terribly big.  The nearest civilizations are dwarven, to the north, and human, to the southeast.

As for multi-level cliffs, you just run up the slope, and you'll pop up several Z-levels.  You could still maim yourself if a mountain animal knocks you off, though.

Before I upload, does anyone have any complaints about that spot?  The map itself is 65x65

Looks like a pretty righteous, 3 - 4 hour trek. My only question regards what version of DF you are running, Khlûl'hloo?

Awesome, that's the last version I downloaded. (39d)

Hey, if you could upload the world now, that'd be great, because I need to evacuate from the internets in 15 minutes.

Thanks, Khlûl'hloo! If you can't get it uploaded in time, I'll just grab it tomorrow and try and catch up. By sending you guys viruses. jk jk.

It's almost uploaded, would it go in Pregenerated Worlds or Community Games?

Alright, my first contestant, Jonic Lovetricked, is at the base of the mountain, and preparing to attempt the summit for great justice!
Supplies:

15 units of food
10 units of water
A water coating on every single body part.
Iron Armor
Sword

Let's see how he does.  I agree with Theoclymenus, someone should totally do an RP journal of their attempt.

UPDATE:  First discovery!  A river, cutting a natural canyon through the mountain.  It was so deep I thought it was a chasm at first, but there's water at the bottom.

Scratch that, it's a brook.  I jumped in and couldn't get out because I was swimming.  Now I have to leave the mountain and try again.  Good thing I was still bordering the flat lands.

UPDATE: I'm at the first filled-in triangle.  Only 7 world-map tiles away from the summit.  Is anyone else trying?

Koo, koo.

The chalk of the foothills has given way to obsidian.  I must be getting closer.
