Is it possible he was carrying it but he decided to go take a nap, and dropped it just before getting into bed?

Is it possible this alligator was killed in that room? (Kind of a long shot)

Hunters won't do anything while there are things to hunt, so you need a seperate dwarf who is a butcher (in my experience anyway)
