DF invading other games

Would the person who was playing EVE Online earlier under the username "Urist" please step forward so we can finish the conversation we were having before my connection dropped out.

Though I'm obviously not that person, I've found I keep naming my WoW characters after my DF heroes. I have Urvad, the Shaman, and Oled, the Priest.

Hehe.

I play EVE online, but I'm not that person, sadly.

I played it for a few days with a Trial Account.  It was pretty fun, but I've heard bad things about it.  Like it panders to the hardcore few, at the expense of casual gamers.

I'd be grateful for some opinions on EVE. I finally have some disposable income and I've been considering trying out a MMORPG.
How much time does it steal and how much do you need to be involved in the faction politics?

I didn't play enough to get into it, but I've heard it's an insane time-sucker.  You learn skills by reading skill-books, and some of them take like a day or something to actually increase your skill.  You can still play and stuff while it's going on, but still.

I like it because you can actually lose your stuff in combat (as in, everything you're flying with). It's the best implementation of risk and reward in an MMO I've ever seen. Also, the "PvP everywhere" concept with safer (but not safe) zones is very complex in that it allows various "stages" of PvP - faction warfare, corp wars and suicide gankers in high-sec empire state, pirates in low-sec and large scale alliance politics in null-sec. As for catching up to the old players...your character's skills really don't matter that much, since most of the old players will probably be skilled to efficiently fly several different ship types, so if you pick your goals and specialise in a single ship type you want to fl, you can get good skills early on, and besides, your skills matter more than your character's skills.

EDIT: Cthulhu, your skills train all the time you've got them set to train, regardless of whether you're playing, or even running the game, thereby eliminating the level grind present in other games (even though you'll likely) still be grinding for money to fund your PvP activities. You should always have a skill training. And the longest skills can take several weeks, depending on your learning skills, attributes and implants. I don't really see it as time-consuming, since you, naturally, do other stuff while your skills are training (which is, all the time).

I've been playing for six days and already several of my skills will take nearly a week each to train to the next level. I imagine the top-tier skills will take even longer.

And it is in fact an insane time-sucker. I've probably already logged twenty-four hours of play.

I've read your character learns skills even while offline, doesn't he?

EVE is... long periods of serenity interrupted by explosive minutes of ganking, player killing, and abuse, with a political backdrop. It's probably the most unique MMO out there, but my experience with it is somewhat limited.

Oh, and everyone who plays (or wants to play) EVE should read this. One of the greatest stories ever told.

Yes. You obviously don't have to be online for your skills to train.

Oh, and another thing: The economy is entirely player driven. The only thing NPCs sell are the skill books, pretty much everything else is manufactured and sold by the players. The manufacturing process is pretty involved too, it consists of mining the ore from asteroid belts or moons, refining it into materials, using the materials to construct half-products (ie ship subsystems), assembling those into products and delivering them to a place where they'll sell well.

*feels like a fail* I couldn't even finish the 3rd assignment or so of the tutorial when I tried the trial, and I really liked how shiny the game was too.

"there is a pirate in front of you, approach it"

"noooes, I want to wander free in this galaxy! Yaay!
(5 mins later) ...I can't..
(5 mins later) ..hmmkay... to the pirate then..
(10 mins later) Where's the reverse on this ship?...
(15 mins later) Stars sure are shining brightly...
(20 mins later) hello.. tutorial lady? (1 min later) Anyone..?"

Though, I gave up quite quickly. Come to think of it, it's mindboggling how I managed to learn DF but controlling a spaceship is still a mystery to me.

Believe it or not, there's nothing forcing you to do the tutorial if you feel like you don't need to. And it seriously feels like a chore on the third account.   :D

:)

If I were collecting quotes, I'd scoop this one up.
All the better when taken out of context.  :)

It sounds like a combination of early Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, in space.  Hm...  If I had an income I think I might actually like it.  You don't get to build things though do you?  I mean like structures.
