Working Toward LCS 3
« on: January 11, 2004, 07:21:00 pm »

As I wrote in the nonsense area, I've redone the equipment list and added a wait button for sites.  I also updated combat damage so the more traumatic injuries carry more penalties.

I think I'm going do non-Armok projects on the weekends and work on the Armok Item release during the week, to keep myself interested.

I have a fairly long list of things to do for LCS, compiled both from previous posts and my own ideas.  Some of these were:

  • More things to do with volunteers, especially persistent activities that don't expend them in one shot
  • Make disguises more useful
  • Extend what you can do at enemy locations, including some low-level computers to train hacking
  • More skills might come with these new activities
  • More places to attack (I think somebody suggested newspapers, which can publish against yours)
  • Neutral locations?  I'm not sure, but perhaps you'd be able to co-opt businesses outside your compound so you don't lose so much when you get busted.

Other ideas are welcome.

If you are persuasive enough, you can now use disguises to escape from sites even after they are alarmed.  You can also use them to escape from sieges.

I've started some passive activities for volunteers so that they can be useful when they are sitting in your volunteer pool.  You can also set up a business front for your compound to make it harder for the cops to find you, although it might create complications during the regular game as your volunteers try to keep it looking presentable.

Back to it...

Yay for LCS3!

P. S. Any means to lessen harm from sieges are welcome... They were TERRIBLE...

And hey, Why can't I recover some equipment from my HQ while running from siege? Like printing presses and stuff... How am I supposed to earn money enough to cover all the siege expenses???

When Iw as in a siege, I'd just kill a few troops after a however long wait.  They'd back off!    :D

I think that rival agencies (CIA, AM radio, cable news, etc.) should constantly be trying to swap public opinion to more conservative views.  That way, the game is more challenging as you have to ruin their reputations and keeps yours high or else the world will go conservatively mad!

I just typed a giant reply and it was deleted.  Fuck.  Anyway, to recap in shorter form:

LCS 2 has view shifts based on AM/Cable news.  Might be a little slow to notice, but inaction will lead to a conservative victory.  Agree that enemies should do more retaliatory actions aside from full attack.  In fighting off sieges, did you meet the tanks?  Too easy?  Fighting off sieges supposed to go bad eventually like Waco.

Some equipment too heavy too move when running from cops.  Perhaps could move if have truck and get it by cops somehow.  Am considering vehicles for LCS 3.  Would be fun.  Am also trying to make the command center a little more diffuse so you don't get screwed by every siege.

I've got two and a half more pages of ideas to code (there are also two pages of ideas that I won't get to in LCS 3).  It might take a few more weekends, but hopefully it will be worth it.  As before with LCS 2, I'm trying not to just do a minor cosmetic rewrite but instead I want to really enhance the game.

For instance, the compound idea is kind of strange...  that's more of a Waco-cult-thing.  Now you can rent apartments/etc. that you can use as safe houses.  The same sieges and things could happen (for instance, if you were to set up shop in an abandoned warehouse), but now you can break up your Liberals into more than one group, which you can base in different places, so you won't lose everything when a squad is captured.  Moreover, you can take advantage of city services instead of having to build up everything inside of one compound.  That was a faster way to code things before, but now that I have that code base, I can gut/expand/cannibalize it to make things a more satisfying.

There will be lots of other changes as well.  I probably shouldn't give too much away, but I'll keep you posted on my progress.  I guess I'll have to rewrite portions of the manual as well.

Programmed some more LCS today...  many new people...  bloody clothes...  many new places...  next I'm going to make some more not-super-violent activities for your people to do, and update the sieges so that your various safe houses can be under attack at once.  Then I'll do cars if I can think it through.  Basically one list page of must-do things left, and three list pages of optional additions.

Lessee...  I went into an internet cafe and kidnapped a programmer at knife point.  After a few days of torture, it was brainwashed and I had it hack a corporate server for some files.  Then my liberal went out and sold the files to buy a shotgun.  By myself, I made a fourth-rate wife beater to wear, put it on and shot up a cable news station.  Actually, I didn't hit anybody...  I got my arm blasted off all over the walls by a security guard and was mobbed and beaten to death by office workers.

Now for cars...

So as the director guy do you actually do anything now?  And can you have multiple agents do different things on the same day?

Yeah...  more in the spirit of the patty hearst movie with the SLA, you now start as a (character generated) single liberal and have to build up your organization from scratch.  There are no longer volunteers -- people you rescue become part of your group but might not be that useful at first.  You can form multiple squads and they can each visit a site on a given day.  People who are not in squads can do various things -- like steal cars.  Squads are assigned vehicles (as drivers and passengers) and they need cars to visit the farther away sites (nuke plant, etc.).

That's all done.  Next I'm doing car chases (especially after the more extreme site attacks), and then putting sieges back in -- every person in the organization has a location, and the cops/etc. will siege those locations.  You can currently rent out multiple apartments and keep squads in different place, but that costs more money.  I'm also going to put things like the newspaper back in, but you'll have to maybe do production in an abandoned warehouse or something, which can be sieged more like in LCS 2.

And various other things.  Still in progress...  it will probably take a while longer, but I won't let it drag out an excruciatingly long time.  I'll post another update this weekend after I've done more.

Back to thesis...
