so much for my 20-year fortress / perfect site :<

Ah well, concurrent versions will have to do, I s'pose.

Step 1: Backup your saves.
Step 2: Load your fortress.
Step 3: Abandon your fortress.
Step 4: Reclaim it to get the location on the map and the area of influence.
Step 5: Do this.
Step 6: Regen your perfect location in the new version.
Step 7: ? ? ?
Step 8: Profit!

Nooot gonna work- The fortress was generated back in 38*.  Meh, it's a fast enough system- I'll just keep generating until I find a site like it or something.

"unless you rename it elf fortress. and then we will be angry fans"

And quite possibly eat you.

does this mean that the next update will be the army arc?

I can't say I object to the save-break at all. After all, the game is still in alpha and if this kind of thing doesn't happen occasionally, the game won't be able to progress.

I am kind of sad that breaking compatibility is needed to get armies moving about.  I had a very nice build up of 400k bolts that I wanted to bring to bear on the goblins.  I guess I will just have to make them again.  It will be goodto finally be able to really affect the world.

This version is still compatible. The version after this one will bring about the sweeping changes and thus break compatibility.

Compared that I start a new save everytime a new version comes out... AND compared that if I had a save I wanted to keep I simply kept the old version of Dwarf Fortress in addition to the new one.

I am actually surprised there are enough people here who would have disdain for an incompatable new version of dwarf fortress that Toady would actually consider holding out on versions of Dwarf Fortress that are not backwards compatable so much that it has only happened twice EVER!!!

So you had pretty short-lived fortresses in 40a and 40b, eh?

Anyway, I think Toady is doing great at handling backwards compatibility. The latest release cycle was pretty well timed, if you ask me.

Dwarves.
And fortresses.

Oh, and the occasional skeletal carp that rips your limbs off, and the goblin sieges who die from fields of lava, and the elephants that run rampant through said fortress, and the occasional dwarf that goes on a killing spree because her baby drowned, or you ate her cat, or she didn't find turtle shells after she was yelling, "I NEED TURTLE SHELLS!!!" for six months and flipped out and went insane.

Yeah... it's like that.

Time for me to get back in the DF scene, missed a couple of versions due to home renovations, work, Spore*, bodily functions, etc.

Looking forward to those campfires and more interesting sieges. :D

Go Toady!

*DF was initially the maintenance drug I used to fend off the yearnings for Spore during it's development, but sadly said product turned out to be a placebo. Now only dwarves remain. ;)
