Army Formations

so .. sending your dwarves out in a random lackluster charge is cute and all... probably helps reduce your chances of calling a dune worm... But what is really lacking is a simple formation mechanic.

move forward in a shape,  delta, box, line, etc.  put archers in the back,  put spears in the front.  customize the formation.

Seems like a good idea, but I have always thought of dwarfs just charging and causing chaos like vikings  ;D

This is actually on the list of things to go into the very next version already, although it may be pushed back time depending.

This has been suggested forever ago. It's about as common a suggestion as dwarf poop and magic, both of which have been discussed to death (for the record, dwarves will never be coded to need to poop unless Toady can come up with a "fun" implementation and magic is already planned for the distant future).

Here's a link to the List that Fieari mentioned.  You can find the "Ability to create formations" item near the bottom of the Squads section.

Vikings were actually quite organized, they even washed every Saturday and comb there hair.

No-one did that.

Yeah, it stands to reason that they had to spend a lot of time washing blood off themselves.

Technically, isn't it already possible to do this albeit in a limited form? Just make each dwarf in his own squad and place him where you want him. That way you could effectively make a square or line battle formation.

If you're really that anal about it, sure. Most players don't care, they just train their dwarves to legendary+5 wrestling, legendary+5 shield user, deck em out in the best armor they can, and  watch them dodge and block two squads worth of ammo.
