in terms of game mechanics the game doesn't have gender at all.
from the perspective, the great cataclysm of 1999 has rendered everyone sterile and bisexual.

I believe you either mean non-sexed or hermaphroditic...  Bisexual just means they swing both ways.

I suppose it could be viewed as a far-distant future where the metrosexual trend has advanced significantly.

Bisexual works too, actually. They don't have to have their genders changed if they just become indiscriminate. Quite a cataclysm.  ;)
