One of the items in "Underground Diversity" is adding large geodes to the game.
I believe we can mod them into the present version (40d) without much trouble, although we certainly can't make them hollow on the inside or multi z-level.

The way I was thinking of adding it is something like this:
 add [ENVIRONMENT:insert appropriate environment here:CLUSTER:5] for each type of gem that you want to be able to appear as a geode.

Granted, these would provide HUGE quantities of gems, but I think setting the frequency to 5 should keep it from making gems way too common.

For more valuable gems, the frequency could be set even lower.

were there huge underground gem deposits in The Core?
(I didn't see it, which sounds like a good thing based off your post)

Oh come on, The Core was great!  If you look at it as an incredibly subtle deconstruction of the Sci-Fi disaster action movie.  You've got the hard commander who dies with the classic "blood running down his forehead" ominous moment, the big black friendly scientist, the haughty Eurotrash guy who finally snaps, the rugged American and unfeasably reasonably attractive astronaut who survive to the end, and an evil general back home who tries to steal all the glory by doing the same thing that fucked stuff up over again.

Yes, I own the DVD.

Oh yeah, geodes.  Walk-in, hollow gaps in the earth full of crystal, way down in the transverse layers of the crust, would be cool.  But aren't real geodes fist sized?  Adding them as ordinary gems is fine too.

There's a pretty large geode in Ohio - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Cave_(Ohio)

Yup, that geode is what prompted the idea in Underground Diversity, which is where I got the idea that this could be modded in.
Hollow geodes would be cooler, and Toady may add them (now that U.D. is on the dev items.)

Hollow geodes would be cooler, and Toady may add them (now that U.D. is on the dev items.)

That last number ([ENVIRONMENT:insert appropriate environment here:CLUSTER:5] doesn't do anything; as far as I can tell, it's only there for decoration. In fact, all minerals are equally likely to appear within their host layer; the only thing that changes this is that some gems only appear in stone that only appears within a certain other stone that only shows up in some layers, rather than in the layers themselves.

Which implies farmable gems. Which opens a whole new barrel of awesome.
Somebody needs to code up some farmable gem-plants and gem trees/shrubs pronto.

The ones you buy in the souvenir shop are fist-sized because, you know, they're being sold as souvenirs.

They can get pretty big though otherwise.

Barring the gems, scattered caverns would be a great thing to add. A dome-shaped cave with each ascending Z-level being smaller and smaller. Loaded with bats.
