Latching onto stuff.
« on: October 14, 2008, 12:00:03 pm »

The whole idea of a winch was a popular thread awhile back, but one doesn't need a winch to grab stuff. The idea here is that some walls and floors should have the property of being grabbable.

The idea is that one could build latchpoints perpendicular to a flat plane (e.g. a floor or wall), building it on either the floor or wall. Such an object could be grabbed onto. Assuming an object were not attached (e.g. a wagon or crate), one could either attempt to lift (by winch), push, or pull through a latch, or attach a mount to a latch for pulling alone...

I am surprised you didn't include creatures into Latching... or objects even when a creature walks away connected to the item

Hmm...that almost sounds like a fun idea. What would happen if you attached a restrained goblin to an elephant then told the elephant to run around? I like it!

Also a good way to integrate longer leashes.

I love the elephant idea. What about chain-latching to drag goblins along in a chain-gang fashion?

It's a possibility. We set restraint points along the chain where prisoners can be attached. Such a system would be a colorful alternative aside from cages for transporting POWs.

Other uses for latches:
-Suppose Enhance Strength were a magic potion and we had a trained Eagle. Feed it Strength potions and attach ropes to it from which Dwarves could rappel down (Special Forces Dwarves).
-Ziplines (a latch point on a pulley, attached to a long-stretching rope). Need your Dwarves to respond rapidly to attacks?

Let's get creative here folks. :)

This'd also be a good way to implement gallows.

Decide which body part to attach to the rope hm? We could draw and quarter subjects! I like it!
