Pearls.
« on: October 30, 2008, 02:55:14 am »

Wiki says I should be getting some off the boatload of mussels I'm getting. Where do they show up? Gems?

Wiki is wrong then for that one.
Pearls aren't implemented yet.
Sometimes you can buy pearl crafts or things decorated with pearl from the merchants, but that's all.

Can pearls be removed from the game somehow? Getting demands for materials that don't exist is annoying. I don't see why Toady would let something like it happen

I am afraid that nop. That is why impossible to fulfill mandates are so annoying...if we could remove those somehow with modding...that would be excellent. It looks like that the mandate system is hardcoded right now.

Aren't materials in a RAW?

If so, it should be possible to remove or create new ones.
Hardcoded or no, the mandatesystem needs to reference the materials list to work properly.

Has anybody tried modding "pearl" as a corpse-drop from mussles or anything other?

Fixed that for you.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Not all materials are in the raws for the current version.  It looks like the next version might fix this with universal material lists, though.

I don't think itemcorpse will do anything for vermin like mussels, but you could probably do it with a normal creature's itemcorpse or a smelter reaction.

Maybe a "gigantic clam" creature could yield:
-several portions of clam-meat
-some (clam)shell
-a [10%] pearl or giant pearl ...(!) [lightbulb]
-could a [rough gem] be a corpseitem?
And this subsequently refined by the gemcutter into pearl?

-Probably this would be treated as a new type of gem not the pearl refered to by mandate. :(

Nop, that is not possible to do at the moment, since the mandates are hardcoded.

Rough gems can currently be created through itemcorpse, but pearls don't exist yet, so at the moment, it couldn't be refined.

Well, stone and metal mandates correspond to stuff that's in the appropriate matgloss files - why can't there be something in one of them that corresponds to pearl mandates?

So rough gems are not in the raws either?
Or the gemcutter-job also uses the same hardcoded list?

Rough gems are indeed in the raws, you can indeed create a new gem entitled "pearl," and indeed make certain creatures (not mussels and other vermin, unfortunately, as far as I know) drop them upon death.
