Cleaning Off Snow
« on: November 02, 2008, 02:56:54 pm »

I want to build a tower on a Freezing map. Is there any way to prevent my structures from being snow-covered (thereby losing their color) or clean them off once they have enough roofing over them?

You could build a double exterior wall and let magma flow near every single exterior wall tile. It's not hard, it would just take forever for the magma to fill the whole tower and cost you a lot of magma.
Of course, this assumes that warm tiles don't attract snow.
Another, more hilarious option, would be to have floors around each level of the tower, connected by two ramps per level, and let a captured magma creature run back and forth across the rough spiral, melting off the snow while providing a work-interrupting light show.

Hmm. Interesting options, both.

However, seeing as how no bears showed up for my bear farming operation (it'd be so easy, lure with booze...) I have instead collapsed the tower. C'est la vie.

For future reference, I think the easiest answer would be "build an exterior shell first, then build the tower inside of it"

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

I tried putting up a cieling a few levels above, assuming that if the logic for frozen underground water (freezes only on the tile exposed to sky) held true, then anything under the protective umbrella would be fine. However, this did not work, so I unbuilt the roof.

Once the final roof is built, the snow will disappear. I've build various human settlements in snowy areas, you just have to wait a season or four for it to kick the proverbial bucket.

Are you sure? When I was building my tower in a Haunted tundra the snow on the floors never went away.

Well, everything did thaw every two seasons so it could just be regional. Of course, if snow only melts at x temperature and if tiles don't update their temperature then I guess it wont melt.

What would you do? Engineer a method where you have to work hard for a (couple of) year(s) and then don't have to do it ever again. Or work permanently to shovel away snow that you'll know be back again a couple of minutes later?

You're in a cold biome. Obviously you need to have every other level filled with magma anyways so that your dwarves have heated floors.

I'd put up a scaffold and build my roof first.  I don't care about snow getting on the roof, except where it covers the menacing spikes of tower cap or bands of highwood.  Yes, my towers tend to be artifact inspired, with each particularly good artifact getting it's own construction.

Levels getting punched through by cave-ins gets even more fun with a setup like that

Wonder if I should do something like that. Would take a lot of planning though

This is a dwarf fortress. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. This object is adorned with hanging goblins and menaces with spikes of iron, glass, and mudstone. The item is in the shape of Bluesnow the adamantine toy boat.
