How do (or did) you play Dwarf Fortress?

I play with an unmoded ASCII character set and always will
I have a slightly modded ASCII set and/or some creature graphics
I used to play in ASCII but now that I've tried graphics I couldn't get back to it
I couldn't get into the game before I've tried a full graphics set
I play with and without graphics, depends on my mood
Until a proper graphics support is included, I'm playing in ASCII
I refuse to play the game until proper graphics are included

User Interface: a question to all players
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:17:18 am »

Certain messages I've been receiving and a bunch of comments here and there got me thinking about this subject. Therfore, I kindly ask you to respond to this simple question:
How do (or did) you play Dwarf Fortress?

Your set helped tremendously to help me get into the game.

Agreed. Love the set (with a bit of interface tweaking). Probably wouldn't have stuck with DF without it. Yes, I'm a weeny.

I could cope with the ascii, although I found it much easier to play with a graphics set and to introduce other people to what was happening on screen

Im so used to ascii now that i would only play DF with gfx if it came with an incorporated gfx set I think.

It's probably just laziness on my part though,  nothing to do with not wanting graphics, just I dont really need them enough to bother dl'ing a set.

The unmodded ASCII is extremely difficult to get used to for new players. I've been playing rogue-likes for several years now and even for me it was a shocking experience. Quickly moved to Herrbdog's tileset, which eased the pain considerably. Now I'm enjoying Mike Mayday's graphics pack.

Definitely "Until a proper graphics support is included, I'm playing in ASCII" for me.
The mixed ASCII/graphics setup is just annoying to be honest. So it's either full ASCII or full graphics...at least that is my opinion.
I have good graphics software [Photoshop CS3] installed on my HDD, so I will make a [hopefully decent] 32x32 tileset, when we gonna have that full gfx support.  :)

This.  When a new version of DF comes out, I keep playing your latest version until you release an EZ-install pack on your page.

Since the 800x600 curses ships with DF does that count as the default ASCII?

Anyway I only use that.  Other rougelikes like Hengband or ADOM I can't really play without a tileset, but it's the opposite with DF, tilesets just confuse me here.

Besides I sometimes get messages from higher powers with it.   I once got a message in my dining room.  "DOG" because the engraver engraved a donkey, an orc, and a grass assassin in a row.   Didn't know what it was supposed to mean but I gave my dog a beggin' strip just in case.

Yeah, it looks ugly and confusing if you combine ascii symbols with graphical tiles. I think that your opinion will change drastically once we gonna have that separated text/gfx feature.

I have used a number of different tile sets and graphics sets over the time that I have played DF, but right now I'm using the PTTG tile set with no graphics.

What I dislike about graphics sets is that icons show up in the text and in  places where the same character is used as something else, like the world map.  Also, I have difficulty differentiating the different animals, and prefer letters and colors.

I use ASCII and probably always will.  Easier to add creatures in my mods, that way.  It took a bit of getting used to, but I didn't find the ASCII too troublesome.

I have no particular preference really. If I'm playing on my laptop, I'll not bother with tiles, but if I'm using my tileset dev copy (for that tileset that I'm theoretically working on!) then I use tiles. Tiles can be nice to have for a couple of things... makes it easier to tell different types of guard apart I guess. And it's convenient for adventure mode, certainly.
