at least it sure LOOKS like a fortress I tried to build.  the other screenshots look almost DF worthy.  except its a real-time tactical game, from what i can tell.

Stardock to Publish Demigod

Plymouth, MI - April 7th - Stardock and Gas Powered Games announced today that they have reached a publishing agreement for Gas Powered Games' upcoming PC game, Demigod.

Demigod is a team-based action game with RTS and RPG elements. Players take control of a massive Demigod with the goal of annihilating their opponent's position in a given area while preventing the opponent's Demigod from doing the same to them...

It will be an amazing game, no doubts.

I see no real relation to DF at all.

well no, of course not.  except the scenery and architecture out of the game looks exactly like things people build in DF, right down to a vaguely gridlike layout and overly complicated waterworks.  the major features are easly interpretable as supports, ramps, bridges, etc.

but as far as the actual game is concerned?  no.  not dwarflike at all?

Yeah, from what I've heard about Demigod, it is not at all like DF.

You would think, however, that somebody out there would be working on a DF mainstream graphical clone.  I've heard that there are programmers from big-name projects playing DF (Sims 3, Warhammer Online).

Who knows, maybe Sid Meyers or Will Wright will take up the honors of doing something like this.  They are the only ones I could really trust with this kind of thing, but even they seem to be too caught up in the $$$ lately (Spore turning out to be a disappointment for example).

Our only hope may lie with Toady finding a big publisher that could slap on a nice GUI, professional tiles and a pretty box.

But then we have to ask ourselves the question, "would we really want DF to go mainstream"?  Instead of an intelligent, mature fan-base, we'd start to get a bunch of Halo 3 pwners, spamming and trolling the message boards.  Maybe it's better to keep DF to the occult.  Something to think about at least.

How can you say Spore is a disappointment?  It's not even out yet.  I think the real problem is the publishers, I read an article somewhere where Will said EA was breathing down his neck telling him to make it for a larger audience(Probably caused the "kiddie" feel the game has taken on).  Also, I don't want DF to be mainstream.  This forum is like a small town.  Everyone knows each other and (most) everyone likes everyone else.  I don't want superxxxcooldude, and narutorulz69, and XxXtHeDeViLXxX, and you get the idea in the forum.  Essentially, this forum is like a sanctuary.  This little area, completely surrounded by chaos and sexual deviancy, but somehow remaining untouched.  Sure, sometimes a seal pops, and the internet starts leaking in, but for the most part it's very nice here.  It's nice because it's not mainstream.  The internet people leave us alone because they don't know we're here.  Let's keep it that way.

i've noticed more instances of this lately.  people mouthing off where they really dont need to be, or assing up when theyre not being provoked.  by and large its from peoples whos names i dont recognize, but they all have been around for a little while and have a non-trival post count.

but i guess thats the kind of reaction you get when you combine these particular reagents:

Demigod is not really DF... heh heh.

No, it's actually intended to be a beautified DotA clone, as admitted by the creator himself.

This is DotA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_of_the_ancients

It's hugely popular where I'm from, far more popular that WoW or Starcraft or any other such game. Basically you just control a hero and run around smacking stuff in a large game of tug-of-war.

I want Dwarf Fortress to go mainstream because I'm tired of all the people who measure their self-worth on how obscure their favorite game is.

Edit:

DF is less like a small town and more like an Indie Band from a small town, you only like it because it's so obscure and as soon as it becomes popular you'll say it sold out and find another garage band.

You're basically a Scenekid.

DF is kind of popular anyway, whenever you criticize it or make a suggestion someone doesn't like a thousand nations of the fanboy empire descend upon you.

Including but not limited to, DF itself. For it is truly madness sometimes...

Also: I am SO totally building that thing now. I love waterfalls. (]:{D>

How do you base a game off of an overrated and story-less mod that is usually only played by dicks?

Why did you have to mention it?

I had almost forgotten about DotA.  Now the nightmares are going to come back.
