Apparently Tibbles hacked his account.

I'm picturing a quivering pile of body parts sucking at a straw with a sad and confused look.

I have nothing meaningful to add to this, but I'm eager to hear the results.  I want to make blobs too.

INTELLIGENT!  Creatures without the [INTELLIGENT] tag don't get hungry or thirsty!

Yes but black bears - one of three creatures that CURIOUSTBEAST_GUZZLER] works for - do not have [INTELLIGENT]. A noble contribution.

After resetting the body type to COMPLETE DEFAULT, I get zero results. Period.

I'm going to try mass-spawning bears next and seeing if they behave properly.

NO.

NO THEY DON'T.

While I desperately hate to do this, I am sending a petition to Toady to ask how in the SAM BLEEDING HELL this works. Forgive my frustration.

p.s. after this i am murdering every bear in the universe.

Good luck with the endangered ones.

Petvalue tag is pointless since it can't be tamed.
Mundane doesn't apply since its not a real-life creature.

My suggestion would be to give it a full set of organs, change name to slime via bodygloss. Then remove the organs one by one to see any change in behavior.

Last, the tag VERMIN_EATER makes vermin eats food.

Yes, but then it'd be a vermin, and would appear intermittently.

I only added [MUNDANE] to increase the spawn rate.

As far as the bodygloss, as I stated, I tried mass-spawning bears (who are supposed to go for open food) and got NOTHING.

It may be that creature already on a map never get the "hunt for an item to go all curiousbeast over" routine run. Because that might happen as part of the "spawn at the map edge" routine.

Try a surface spawning ooze and see if that changes it's behavior.

My only other thought would be that maybe curious eaters and drinkers are actually broken and no one has noticed because they show up so rarely. Try curiousbeast-item and see if you can at least get that to work?

It makes them seek out those items when they arrive on the map.

From a PM to Toady. I think this might be it.

It'll take some fiddling to get them to start spawning conveniently and on top of other creatures, since you're only allowed one Predator group on the map at a time. Maybe increase the frequency to 200 and see if that puts them on top of the spawn list. If this is the only problem, the organs might not be necessary after all.

if/when the next version allows for creatures to spawn from off the map in the underground features, that may inadvertently fix this behavior. Good luck with the above ground versions in the meantime.

Only in Dwarf Fortress would we ask the game creator how to make a horrible world-destroying ooze.

And only in dwarf fortress would he reply with how to do it.

I totally expect to see "Oozeman" in the next version now.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Alright, I'm currently murdering the game in order to get this to work.

In an effort to isolate a biome to make them spawn for me in, I have removed the [BIOME_TAIGA] and [BIOME_TUNDRA] tokens from all other creatures that have them, and this has appeared to succeed in causing them to not appear.

However, even with a homeotherm/layering range copied from a taiga creature, and the application of the appropriate biome tags (taiga), the Ooze will not appear, even with a frequency of 80. Any help, gents?

BWAHAHAHA

YES

YES

YES

Now, there are some... minor problems, success here aside.

For one, they seem to have some pathing problems. Namely, they will backtrack in order to remain in a tight cluster, despite having [LOOSE_CLUSTERS].

Second, they were reluctant to fully approach the booze stockpile when the animals were present. I would have hoped that [NOFEAR] and all those other tags would have taken care of this, as would their predator status that would prompt them to murder and eat any nearby animal, unless there's something I'm missing here.

What are the missing pieces needed to make these omni-hostile?

I really ought to stop posting in my own thread, but...

After adding the [CURIOUSBEAST_ITEM] tag and changing their body type back to the one-piece-with-many-chunks configuration, the oozes still retain their relatively cowardly behavior. One of them stole some fish I had embarked with and made a beeline for the edge of the map (slowly, granted), while the others wandered around critically wounding my pets and not drinking my booze. Perhaps my organs-for-eating theory wasn't too far off; barring that, re-adding the secondary mouth part.

Hilariously, also, one of the oozes had all of its Chunks ripped off and its Core mangled by a dog; shortly thereafter, however, it healed up and started moving again. A pack of five amateur wrestlers, a miner and a woodcutter, however, managed to kill all of them with no casualties.

Having an attack whose only damage type is [BURN] seems to make them mangle and injure only, but never kill; this may need to be remedied by changing the type to SLASH or BLUDGEON. On the other hand, some would argue that immense crippling is a fate worse than death, so if the damage counter was increased immensely...

I'm not sure if there is any way around the inherent cowardice of the [CURIOUSBEAST] tags, so this may end up being something of a failed attempt; however, I have yet to see what happens when I bait them with constructions to destroy.

Alright, this is getting ridiculous... they can be chased off by cats.

Pain me though it does, I will have to declare this a failed project for the time being... short of, you know, making them a perma-siege civ. Which might work. Wouldn't be the same, but eh...
