make them spawn fast enough (so they rocket towards booze and food)
and they should become a serious problem, if only they clog the map and resist death

Well, they do rocket towards the booze and food. It's just that as soon as anything not-wild gets in the way, they stop rocketing.

How hard to kill are they? Are they running scared because they're weak?

they're relatively easy to kill, but they are also capable of mangling a dwarf in seconds through massive burn damage. I don't think that weakness factors into their cowardice, as cougars and most other predators will generally run from soldiers, if but briefly.

Crazy Idea: What if you gave a curiousbeast tag to every wild creature in the game? Imagine when you start a fortress, only to have it collapse because a swarm of turkeys drank all of your booze, a herd of deer steal all of your barrels and tools, and a bunch of warthogs made off with all of your food and seeds.
