Nowhere else and beyond
« on: April 21, 2008, 02:51:00 pm »

Found this game today, it's pretty nice for a webgame. You can play it with or without java. Since I don't want to do too much advertising, I'm only going to quote the site.

quote:
Nowhere Else and Beyond is the first web based RPG that allows players to explore exotic locations in 2D or 2.5D, interact with other players, and build your own island and create quests within it.

The best part is it's free and it runs within your browser and works on all platforms without any download. You may optionaly use our Java engine if you want to experience the full features the game has to offer. Firefox/Mozilla recommended as it provides better performances.

Main features:

   * Full multi player RPG
   * Chat
   * Private messages
   * PvP fights
   * Player managed markets
   * Multiple non linear quests
   * Graphical interactive 2D map (like other normal top view RPG)
   * Progressive monster difficulty (as your level up, harder and new monsters appears)
   * Real-time PvP (only available in the main island Arena at the moment)
   * Player managed islands (create your quests, NPC, locations and much more)
   * A special pet system which let you talk in with your own words to your pets.

   * Two different combat systems (can be choosen)
   * In game casino (slot machine, roulette, and card game)
   * Alchemy and cooking potions and other
   * Crafting object
   * Fixed and random map (depending of the location)
   * Medals to reward players
   * Automatic player journal
   * Player managed, fully designed and owned dungeons
   * Player designed objects (stats and description)
   * Thiefs and pickpockets actions can be performed
   * Player clans (let share objects for example)
   * Weather (rain/snow)
   * Day time (night/day)
   * 20 Mb of free webspace (no banners)
   * Free simple blog

Real-time Perspective Java engine:The perspective engine let you walk in the game more or less like a 3D game, see the other players walking around, and beeing able to interract with them (chat, pickpocket, heal, etc...).

Or Real-time 2D Java engine: In the Java engine, you will see the other players walking around, and you will be able to interract with them (chat, pickpocket, heal, etc...). It's up to you to decide if you want to use the Java or the Javascript version.

Or Real-time 2D Javascript map: While moving around the world, you will use a 2D view of the surrounding world, will see monsters approaching, and place to visits. All this is done in Javascript locally, it means you will not need to wait for the server on each move, and you do not need plug-in to play!

Design your own objects: Something which maybe only a few other RPG let you do ! Design your own objects ! Yes, really ! Choose the stats, give them a name, and then craft them. You can even resell them to other players.

Own designed / managed dungeons: Where do you think rich players invest their gold ? In the design of their very own dungeon. Where the can buy furniture, dig galleries, place chest, and soon hire monsters ! In your dungeon you can sleep on beds and restore yours MP / HP points, and store / retrieve gold. You can even rent rooms to other players.

Combats: As in most RPG, combats take some part of the game play. Here you will see your opponent, and will be able to attack with your weapon, drink potions, and cast spells. The game offer two types of combat (you can switch at any time from one to the other). One is simple but limited, the second let you battle against multiples monsters, and use more strategy.

Quick stats view: All the time you will see your current stats and see if you need to heal yourself or if you are near to the next level.

NPC dialogs and quests: One of the most important parts of Nowhere else and beyond is the quest and dialog system. You will be able to discuss with a huge number of NPC and follow personal quest, which will let you travel around the world. A journal will keep track of important things for you.

Multi player interaction: All the main locations in the game offer real-time chats which allows player to chat with others, a market place allows to sell / buy things from other players, and finally an arena allows to fight against others.

Weather: the game offer rain, snow, days and nights effects.

It's interesting that it is all browser-based, and that you can build your own stuff, but it seems kind of...meh.  There are a gazillion free MMO's out there these days, I'd need some positive player feedback before I'd be willing to play it.

I know what you mean, most games feel really 'meh' for me as well. This one has nothing special going on for it, except for being based on the browser. It feels more like a browser single player old style rpg, so while it can be okay if you want to kill some time or do something while chatting, it's nothing you can really get into.
