I can't figure out how to put anything into it, except when I die.

You press tab. :)

EDIT: By the way, the character I use the most currently is Rookie Bow Tyrak.

It's Tab to open the chat.

I'd recommend you use elochat to see the chat, though you use the game to type it in.

Edit: Faster-post-no-jutsu!

It comes with Elona when you download it. You could also see the journal and press 7 or 9 to go to chat, but the program is better because you can filter out deaths.

Ok works great. Elona is much more fun, when you can talk to people while playing.

why not play nethack instead?

I would, but the only tileset is isometric and looks horrible.
And are there maybe tilesets for ADOM?

Isometric? You mean the Vulture's Eye? I tried it before and I don't like it either.

But Vulture's Eye is not a tileset... it's a new GUI for NetHack, tied to a specific version of NetHack.

I just tried Nethack with the Absurd Tileset.
Man I wish it was as user friendly as Elona  :-\

Does Falcons Eye of Vultures Eye does make the contols easier?

Controls are basically the same - but Vulture's added some mouse support I think.

I don't like it because it cannot display the whole level at once - you need to keep switching back and forth between its map and main game window.

You will get used to the controls eventually and they will become your instincts. You don't really need to learn the full set right away... and you won't be using all of them in the end. Just start with the basics (movement, inventory, equip/remove, interacting with containers and NPCs), and look up help (or the guidebook) if you need to do something else, and add that to your commonly-used-commands-list.

While I can't play Dwarf Fortress without a graphical tileset, I play NetHack in ASCII... mostly because the amount of things to be represented is so much smaller in NH.

Well since I'm from the 'SNES-generation' I can't really get used to ASCII games, I need some sort of graphical interface.

Which tileset would you prefer for it?

And I've given up another character on Elona.
A lvl 10 pianist, which just can't get any money.
Looks like I underestimated the profit coming from shops.

Any suggestions how I make a 'rich' character?
A Farmer maybe?

Oh and I'm always out of platinum coins since I tend to get every crafting and collecting skill.
Could you tell me which are 'must-haves' and which are useless?

Getting money is ridiculously easy, just do quests on the town notice board. Granted, it will still take a long time to earn enough money to buy the really expensive stuff (+100,000 gold), but it's the most effective money farming i know of so far.

Yeah I know that.
But then you buy one of the expensive items, and it's all gone.
I need a source of steady income.

If you have the patience to raise performing, the party jobs can pay very well. It isn't unusual to get 10-15k from a single job (or even from a single performance). Granted, it requires around 25+ performing to get anywhere. If you can get a ranch, use it to raise a bunch of low level monster and practice performing there.

Another good way to make money is by doing random dungeons. However, to be truly effective, you need to complete the pyramid invitation quest to get the statue of opartos (which allow you to reset every completed random dungeons).

Something I never tried myself, but might be effective is by gathering tons of engagement ring/amulet in puppy cave and marrying some of your companion. You get some gift everytime, including a potion of corruption (everytime I think, but I am not sure). For further profit$, you can bring the companion to port Kapul to do the wife collector quest (at the cost of some karma).

As for crafting/gathering skills, I usually only get anatomy, cooking,  farming, mining and, if I chose Ehekatl of Luck as god, fishing. Of these, I only consider cooking and farming as "must-haves". Anatomy is great, but you still get plenty of corpse from your ranch without it. Mining is mostly good when doing dungeon crawling because some floors require you to dig your way between rooms (or teleport, but that's unreliable). Fishing is worthless unless you follow Ehekatl and even then, not really needed as corpses can do the job of raising favor well enough.

What I'm curious about is how you handle your skillpoints.
And where you would suggest to put them in as a pianist.
Can I dump all of them in negotiation?
