Tom Proudfoot site update!
« on: December 10, 2007, 06:33:00 pm »

Tom's Site has been updated including a blurb on the news page about the games he has been working on and a new forum has been added to replace the one he had to take down due to spam-bots.

Proudfoot?  Reminds me of Dragonlance with those fellahs who'd somehow end up with someone else's goods  :)

Tom is a pretty well known programmer behind such things as Super Lots of Added Stuff Hack("S.l.a.s.h.), a Nethack variant as well as Nahlakh & Natuk.

Ohhh, the rogue games T_T  I tried many times to get into these which eventually led me to finding dwarf fortress.  I never got to enjoying those rogue games much, minus Dwarf Fortress.  They sound so interesting to play, but I think Diablo II spoiled me.  I tried out his "latest" game on that website and it didn't fare well with me either.

Anyways, it's nice to see this guy make a post or two every decade  :D

I enjoyed the original Rogue but really none of the sequels until DF. Some had good ideas, but overall always found Nethack and its derivatives rather irritating - they lost the charm of the original game.

Yeah...I only posted the above here because there are a number of old timers at these forums, including Tarn himself(the creator of Dwarf Fortress) who are fans of Tom's games and roguelikes as well. Not trying to convert the rest of you or anything  :). I myself cannot play Dwarf Fortress because it is 'real time' and I am a turn based guy.

I thought Skel would be fine if there were tiles.  Maybe that was adventure mode.

I guess he felt he had to update as Toad kept on phoning up and pretending to be interested in houses before asking when POWS would be finished.

I tried...even without tiles. Game was just getting too many rave reviews to not try enjoying it. But I can't play real-time games for shit. I can only play games that allow for me to eat a sandwich while contemplating my next move. About the only exception to this is Duke Nukem 3D and even that is only enjoyed in spurts.

DF does have a pause button, though.

DF is turn based, pause it and '.' is for advancing a turn, you won't ever have to unpause it, you can even set so that space will not unpause it if you pres it by mistake.
Realtime is just a feature that advances turns automatically, the reason for using it is that it becomes even more slow paced, but if you have the patience you can play one turn at a time if you want to.

Wow. Why didn't I notice that? Will give it another shot with the pause feature.
