Elven equipment
« on: November 18, 2008, 06:49:46 pm »

First of all, I personally remove wooden swords from elven arsenal. They're silly at best and only serve to undermine their menacing features

Wooden armor's effectiveness is dubious at best. In my view, it could be replaced with humanoid skin armor. Goblin and maybe human skin. I think it'd fit our ecoterrorist cannibals nicely since both races tend to destroy plantlife and are frequently warred against. Fits with the theme of letting nothing go to waste. It'd be lighter as well, fitting their association with agility & grace. At the very least include something that facilitates this for modders. The current system is quite restrictive

If possible, their caravans would benefit from a minor band of escorts armed with spears and bows. Perhaps make them stealthed with movement bonuses to regular walking speed to offset their poor armor and soft flesh

This all would serve to give them flavor. Hopefully people would finally realize they're an immortal race of zergling ecoterrorists who kill and eat you for cutting trees, not Tolkien hippies. Sure, their fighting prowess in world gen is rather laughable but I think that's more of an issue with the generator itself

I'm looking forward to composite weapons. It should allow me to tip their arrows and spears with stone for increased effectiveness. Their threat is brushed off far too easily as is

The fiction behind wooden swords is stuff like:
Quote from: Threetoe's "Animal Justice"
She drew her curved blade Elstra, a wooden sword polished for a hundred years in the brooks and streams of the forest until it took on the aspect of steel.

Maybe elves could make armor as a trophy from humanoids they've killed, but your regular old do-nothing guard probably shouldn't be wearing goblin leather armor.

Wooden swords wouldn't last a year in that damn stream.  :D  I don't know, if Toady wants to make all their weapons magical wooden artifacts, fine I guess. Personally I don't like it since they have the numbers to not need such silly contrivances but I can just mod my own game

The leather armor was just the only alternative to wooden armor that I could think of. Then again, the game has fish bone armor and bolts so I think Toady cares little for my notions of realism  :P

Or you could add new weapons in which fit the elf personality.

I gave my elfs huge thorn lances for lulz. Which are powerful as hell, but make for more interesting elf sieges. As well as a few more items.

Do the words "elf," "dwarf," "wizard," and "goblin" mean nothing to you?
Why don't you just mod the game to take out everything that doesn't have the mundane tag if lack of realism bothers you so much?

Dwarf: "The Elves are comming sir"
King: "Ha, they shall be easy pickings"
Dwarf: "But sir... They have pointy sticks"
King: "Pointy sticks? We are doomed!!!"

Anyhow, I am not sure what you want the elves really to do... I guess they could make weapons out of some rock... but wood is exactly the same anyhow so it is pointless. Well unless Toady finally gives most objects in the game differing stats in attack and defense.

Perhaps we could give elves the technology level of Native Americans? Seems to fit them, eacept taken to a crazy level. Then again, most races would be best taken to their extreme levels. Dwarves are industrialists to the max, kobolds thieves to the max(Not even making their own homes, but 'stealing' caves), goblins evil to the max and elves hippie natives to the max.

So yes. No swords. Pointy sticks with pointy rocks on 'em.

Or we could give them fruit, seeing as pointed sticks are nothing compared to it. You would likely need guns, heavy weights or tigers to take THOSE elves out.

I would like to remind you all that Miyamoto Musashi, the famed Japanese swordsman, killed most of his opponents with a wooden practice sword(s.) He just beat them to death with it.

Of course, he was able to do that because he was so godamned good that nobody could really touch him. And he actually had upper body strength, which Elves are sadly lacking...

No. No, I want Elves to keep their wooden swords. The fact that their weapons are used by dwarves as practice weapons is just too deliciously appropriate.

Reminds me of the Raymond E. Feist universe.  The entire Tsuranni civilization has virtually no metal and hence everyone but the filthy rich use very strong hardwoods lacquered many times over for their weapons/armor/tools.

Oddly enough, I know the series you're talking about. Good times.

How about you mod in Ironwood? Although technically speaking there are like 12 species called "ironwood" you could just make a wood that, when used for making weapons/armor, acts like bronze (which is less than iron but better than copper)

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

I fully support having endless hordes of elfs covered in goblin, dwarf and human skins, wearing bones in their hair, charging your fortress with long wooden spears, wooden shields draped with people skin and bloting out the sun with their arrows before zerg-rushing your women and children and eating them alive.

As someone who had his arm broken by a wooden sword once, I'd say they're not silly ;-)

Yes, wooden swords can be used like clubs. But what's the point of making it a sword at that point? The combat rules make it pierce steel armor too on occasion, to the point of piercing organs with it. That's some mean wood you have there

Anyhow, I am not sure what you want the elves really to do... I guess they could make weapons out of some rock... but wood is exactly the same anyhow so it is pointless. Well unless Toady finally gives most objects in the game differing stats in attack and defense.

Bows and spears are effective, wood or not. Considering how damn many of them are around, they could easily make do with inferior weapons

Do the words "elf," "dwarf," "wizard," and "goblin" mean nothing to you?

Just because the game has a dash of magic in it doesn't automatically mean it has to be balls to the wall loopy with absolutely nothing making sense. Typically things that get away with being unrealistic are more or less awesome or interesting. Wooden swords and armor, eh. Armor made out of fish bones, eh. If Toady likes wooden swords, that's just fine. It's not like suggesting something hurts

Agree with you whole heartedly on the last comment, but "Tolkien's Hippies"????!!!!

Tolkien's Elves were a bunch of  aggressive, ruthless, suspicious, frequently bigoted, arrogant, craft-loving, covetous, metal-working, sword-naming bastards who lost their chance at inheriting the earth because they were angry enough to go war-to-the-knife with a demiurgic power over the theft of some artifact jewelry. So they like trees. Big deal. I like trees.

I'd say "Hippies" applies much more to Toadie's Elves.
