Googling "kobold second edition" brings this picture up, which seems to fit Toady's description:

Toady really needs to implement some Kobold Quest style bug-lore in DF.  I want to see scorpion flails.

Nope, that's the one from the monster manual.

Damn, that's just frightening. Is that the one from monstrous compendium? I've never actually seen it, but toad said the pic on the Kobold Quest menu is based off it.

I'm not sure.  It's the second hit on GIS for "mongrelfolk".  The host credits it as part of the "Fiend Folio," and there is a Monstrous Compendium Fiend Folio, but whether it's specifically that image that Toady is referencing is anybody's guess.

They look however you want them to.  That's the beauty of ASCII.

I'm pretty sure it's in this book, which is not quite as old as me, but not so far away either.

I used to have the picture in digital form, but I can't find it.  The page is probably buried off somewhere.  It was a binder with individual sheets, so they were easy to lose.

I'm betting the kobolds will be a very interesting race at some point.
A Contextual based language is both crude and very sophisticated at the same time. Dolphins are said to have a Contextual based language.
This means a few words for a kobold speaks volumes. This isn't very effective for the establishment of an organized industry, so the fact that the Kobolds are using copper tools instead of stone should be an example that they are at least as intellegent as elves, dwarves, and goblins. Perhaps moreso.

I don't know about them be smarter elves/dwarves/humans/goblins, it seems more like they're meant to be subhuman kleptos. Also there's only one stone weapon in the game, I have no clue why there aren't stone axes though.

If only I had a scanner...I have that....

what Toady says is that his kobolds are the bug-eyed really ugly looking things from first edition of D&D.
Nothing like being draconian OR doglike.  Just really a big-eyed mini version of it's goblin.

Description from book (This differs a little bit from toady's final version, mainly the red eyes part):
"Barely clearing three feet in height, kobolds have scaly hides that range from very dark rusty brown to a rusty black.  They smell like a cross between damp dogs and stagnant water.  Their eyes glow like a bright red spark and they have two small horns ranging from tan to white. (skip)..their non-prehensile rat-like tails..."

I asked at a D&D forum, and got linked this image: Kobolds.  Is this the right one?

no, those still look kinda dog/dragon like.

When you see a snout, reject it.  This thing has it's face smashed in like a pug.
