I forget if the anime has the porn monkey (orangutan or something, think it was on a ship?), but it has the cyborg nazi, right?

Oh, it absolutely has both. It's surprising how faithful the anime actually is, if memory serves. The only changes in the anime that I can remember are stuff that's actually ADDED to the anime. For as much as I love Araki's writing, he did leave a couple of loose ends as well as some stuff that's rather loosely explained.

The anime, especially Diamond is Unbreakable, helps gives closure to stuff in the manga that otherwise just isn't there.

Then Hoods did Mysterious Girlfriend X (which is squicky but more mainsteam)

Unless the anime is dramatically different to the manga, I should note that Mysterious Girlfriend X has one really frickin' weird major element, but it's not... exactly sexual? And aside from that, I don't think they actually even kiss in the manga.

...the spit thing is undeniably really strange though.

I'unno, it's been awhile since I read it but I remember that one being decently lewd. Might have been, like... cryptolewd or something, but the element was there. Not terribly porny, just sorta' low-key lascivious.

I mean, if 774 can move from being one of the most famous loli porn authors of all time to being "legit" with Nagatoro, I don't see why a studio could move from doing hentai animation to "legit" shows with real budgets.

Frankly, I'm more disappointed it doesn't go the other direction more often. Imagine what a studio like Gainax or Kyoani would put in a proper porno hentai flick. :V

Watching people slurp saliva off each other's fingers with the slurpy sound effects is plenty suggestive. The main reason Hoods ended up with it rather than antother studio is probably the gag-reflex inducing nature of the work rather than the sex angle. If you've noticed, anime, even ones with a fair amount of fanservice, don't generally tend to use bodily-fluid humor anywhere near as much as Western cartoons do: fart, poo, pee and vomit jokes are much more prevalent in western cartoons. There are unspoken taboos on both sides, but they differ.

Ah, yeah, they probably played that up more in the anime, and it's probably more obnoxious when there's actual sound.

Gainax is what happens when a studio that mostly makes porn goes legit, honestly. Imagine what the next Marvel movie would be like if it was produced by Brazzers and be impressed that Gainax wasn't worse in the early days.
Also, porn isn't illegal; porn companies are already legit.
I don't think that's the meaning of legit he meant. I think he more meant a 'small-town actor becoming a big movie star' "going legit", then a 'decriminalizing our works' "going legit".
Got it in one.

The point stands though, porn companies are seen as seedy or gross.  Though eh, I guess that's particularly an American thing.
Because American porn companies tend to be seedy and gross, what with the periodic revelations that people are getting raped when the cameras are off.

I'm not sure why anyone is shocked that a country with such a twisted approach to sexual ethics in other regards is any better when it comes to the porn industry.

The live action porn industry in east asia is way seedier than in the west, though.

I'm watching Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai from last season: "Love is War". It's about two student council members at an elite school who are in love with each other, but they're too arrogant to admit it to each other so they're constantly scheming to get each other to confess. But the series takes it to 11 as a sort of Death Note style battle-of-the-intellects with convoluted schemes and internal monologues similar to Light vs L.

As an example, here's the bit I'm up to from the episode I'm watching right now:

Yeah I just finished that show, really stellar all around. Unlike most anime "comedies" that rely on stupid gags and canned "humor", Kaguya-sama is actually original and funny. It also helps that the show just randomly aims to impress with STELLAR animation in short spurts, such as the ending to episode 3, which is so silky smooth and high quality you'd think the entire animation budget got put into that one sequence.

Okay, that is far and away better than I expected from the description. Reminds me a bit of the Ace Attorney series, only with high school maybe-romance instead of courtroom battles.

It's like spy vs spy, but teen drama instead of the cold war.

Kaguya-sama is actually original
ACKSHYUALLY I think you'll find it's an adaption of a manga. It works better as anime in my opinion though. The only thing that comes across with less potently in the anime is the "how cute" panels, which aren't that huge of a loss. I know that's not what you meant.

I don't think he meant "anime original" rather he meant it as in original rather than generic.

That's the reason I decided to include a clip from the show. It's a hard one to write a description of that doesn't make it sound meh.

I just finished Jojo Stardust Crusaders, and holy carp, that was some of the worst anime I've ever seen. And I've seen some really bad shit in my time. But this was just an entirely episodic monster-of-the-week affair that dragged on and on forever, full of massive plot holes and toilet humor. And it wasn't enough that they made the new generation of characters complete trash, but they also had to bring back the previous generation and completely change their personality and abilities without any explanation at all.
And I honestly don't understand how this could have happened. The first two story arcs were really great, and then this arc was just the complete opposite in every conceivable way. How did this story go so very very wrong? *sigh*
