Watching that one stupid isekai where the guy is a sword. It's stupid in a good kind of stupid. Chainsaw man got massive hype but the CGI is marmiting people, but I still think it's fine. Akibahara maid war is really stupid too in a good kind of stupid

After what felt like forever with nothing too interesting coming out (besides the sporadic seasonal stuff like BNHA) it's a proper deluge these past few weeks.

I was already pretty excited for new Bleach after more than a bloody decade and then I find out that there's a new gundam show, and new BNHA AND a new Mob??? Oh and Spy x Family because why not. Chainsaw man too while you're at it.

So far the gundam show is ok, the protag girl is irritatingly meek and I do hope she grows out of that shit, but I'm liking the worldbuilding and the themes they're playing with this time around. Always count on gundam to bash together giant robots smashing each other with themes like freedom of choice or bloody child soldiers. The fights are super pretty too, and from what I've seen of the announced kits, the mecha designs are going to get wilder and weirder as it goes on.

Bleach is Bleach, might feel a bit dated if they don't up their animation and direction game since a lot of brilliant stuff has come out since it was last time on air. Still, probably gonna watch it purely for nostalgia reasons, even if it doesn't turn out too great.

Chainsaw man is pretty good, interesting premise, good visuals, and of course plenty of gratuitous, chainsaw related violence.

BNHA and Mob are as always great, characters I like doing cool stuff while pushing the boundaries of good animation and fight choreography.

Spy I haven't gotten around to yet, mostly because I learned that there's new episodes literally today.

I think I'll be able to cover an entire week with daily episodes, that's how much stuff there is. Don't think I've had this much anime to watch since like, high-school. Tho the more probable scenario will be me remembering once a week anime is a thing and then binging everything that's come out that week :V

You... might clarify the sword thing? I'm not entirely sure if there's been more than one of those sword ones animated, but there's definitely more than one isekai'd as a sword works in existence. Could swear I've seen at least three or four light/web novels based on that concept.

... don't recall ever reading one, though. The ones like reincarnated as a fork or a vending machine or whatever were more interesting, y'know?

Name is Reincarnated as a Sword / Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita (2022) ongoing series. Highly derivative but honestly it's got better animation than chainsaw man and both MCs are cool. The only thing I don't like is the sword absorbs the power of the stuff it kills and it always worries me when a show leans down the road of "ACQUIRE MORE POWER ACQUIRE MORE POWER" and not "got power, what do?" or "got power, why do?"

Also I'm rather pleased that I found another hidden generic gem. Every now and then I find something like Banished from the Hero's party that sounds generic as hell and opens with a generic premise but then the show surprises me by actually being really good. Interesting characters, good morals, comfy atmosphere, takes the right things seriously yet knows when to laugh. Today I found another hidden generic gem - the ongoing I'm the Villainess so I'm taming the Final Boss. I get very annoyed whenever everything new released is an isekai so I already started at a wrong foot, in that it's another isekai. I'm glad I stuck around though because it quickly had me laughing like a fool.
The main character is isekai'd to a generic fantasy romance game universe where her character is a side-villainess who ultimately dies in the background to make the actual main characters have plot progression and a clean moral justification for their violence. Armed with this knowledge, she immediately starts sequence breaking all the events and starts aggressively courting the evil demon lord, proposing marriage to him with all the grace and tact of a used car salesman. This show has the atmosphere of a courtly drama AND a D grade romance novel, with plenty of clever writing (the main character manages to deliver so many barbed compliments or "reminders" to her enemies) and it's deeply gratifying to see how the heroine (villainess?) fights back at the unjust typecasting by being resourceful and not just relying on metagame knowledge.

It's just so funny how the MC is utterly brazen at the start. They boldly declare they only see the demon lord as a convenient political marriage to get over her recent breakup so it's really remarkable that their relationship develops at all, and feels very authentic - she definitely works for it. Which all in all is very refreshing, it always annoys me whenever you see isekai main characters who are interested in five romantic leads but don't have the gall to ask a single one out. Meanwhile this lady wastes no time at all and decides she would rather marry and stir up a world of petty shit in her ex's life. Hilarious. Season is only half way done but you could end it here and it'd already be just noice  ;D

*EDIT
I'm surprised I found Cyperpunk Edgerunners and Akudama Drive at the same time. Both are cyberkino in their own ways. Solid 10s out of 10s. Just prepare for the emotional roller coasters to start off-rail drifting

I'm liking the Chainsaw Man anime so far. Having a character just get kicked in the balls five times was way funnier than it had any right to be, especially when it was so well animated. Saying "The Nut Demon kicked him in the nuts." afterwards feels like something out of One Punch Man.

I just like Denji a lot. "It's ok if she's crazy, I just wanna touch boobs." it's an awful policy to have Denji, but I understand the sentiment.

I read somewhere that there's gonna be a different ED for each episode of Chainsaw Man, that's some bonkers budget

I'll believe it when I see it, cause that's insane. It's not unprecedented that animes will make minor alterations to the OP or ED all throughout the show, but entirely different ones is not just costly, but kind of upsets the 'branding' on a pragmatic, marketing level. If there's no stable ED, then it's hard to establish the kind of 'familiarity' that lets meme culture thrive. Where would Jojo part 5 be without Freek'n You?

Denji is great. He is an idiot and a pervert but by having all that interiority he avoids being an idiot pervert character.

I'm surprised Zutomayo was in Chainsaw Man, I didn't expect that at all. Obligatory recommendation to check out their stuff if you haven't already because they bring the funky

He does seem like what you'd expect from a feral orphan. Barely socialised at all, especially love the whole "what did you never go to school or something?" and the double take when Denji just goes "yeah"

Really? I never watched Oreimo, not really my wheelhouse.

Also, it's been brought to me attention that Chainsaw Man's OP is something else as well. Pretty much every frame is a classic reference of some kind. I have a terrible eye for spotting references unless they're plainly obvious, so I only noticed the Big Lebowski one, but they're all dope:

Now I haven't watched a good portion of those movies, like Sadako Vs Kayako, but it makes me wanna check it out.

If you ever feel the need for more after having watched a Chainsaw Man episode, but don't want to get into the manga at an odd point in the story, I strongly recommend Fujimoto's oneshots. And really, this is something I recommend to anyone not watching Chainsaw Man as well. Look Back and Goodbye, Eri are both on par with the Chainsaw Man manga at its best. Which is... what does that mean, exactly? In terms of other manga authors it means they are on the same level as works by Tezuka or Kyoko Okazaki. In more straight-forward terms, it means they are ☼masterful☼. Give them a try.

Oreimo of all works doing something as impressive is really funny.

I started watching Serial Experiments Lain this week, after constant exposure to the titular character when wandering the neocities. I had gotten the vibe down surprisingly well, but that doesn't mean it isn't extremely good or evocative. And confusing, to boot - it's a show that you shouldn't binge on your first try, as each and every episode contains about as much to process as an average anime's cour, or as one of the two last episodes of Evangelion. Suffice to say it hits the spot.
If you somehow are on an old-style forum for an ASCII-graphicked game in the year, and haven't watched or considered watching the show that tries to condense the early internet essence into 13 23-minute episodes, then you should reconsider.

I never really got Lain unfortunatly. The anime throws all of this stuff like "Schuman frequencies" or the "Collective Unconcious" at you, but I was never able to make sense of it. As a result, it just felt pretentious to me.
