General question, how do you guys find new manga/anime to read/watch?

Generally I just look at the usual HERE'S NEXT SEASON'S ANIME charts that are lying around.

That and word of mouth, tvtropes, etc

Word of mouth or text, saw it on /tg/, this thread, lists of "what anime/manga are similar to [anime/manga x]", video compilations of trailers for new anime of whatever season it is, seeing things mentioned repeatedly on TVTropes articles which are generally considered positive aspects of a series.

never followed Naruto.

The idea that a ninja should be wearing day glo orange and shouted an obnoxious catchphrase never appealed to me when I was younger

That is because Ninja in the Naruto universe is actually the word for Wizard.

No I am not lying... the ONLY requirement to be a Ninja... is to be able to use Ninjitsu (Elemental Magic), Taijutsu (Chi Powered Martial arts), or Genjutsu (Psychic assault powers). Or even MORE specifically you are a Ninja if you are human and possess the ability to tap into your Ki energy.

Stealth, assassinating people, or doing anything a ninja would do? not a requirement. Heck Most Ninjas it would seem never actually assassinate people.

That's actually been ran with pretty interestingly in some fanfiction, and if whats'is'face was a writer worth a damn whoever it was could have done some really interesting stuff with it. Urban camouflage and whatnot -- the point of ninja isn't necessarily to be hidden in the shadows, but instead to be hidden, regardless of where they are, including in a crowd. Naruto 'imself could have been trained as, y'know, urban infiltration, getting in with youth gangs, street folk, entertainers... all sorts of stuff.

Wozzname didn't go that route.

As for the assassination thing and whatnot, iirc it's mostly implied that it happened quite a lot. Just... offscreen. Whatever that critter's name was didn't particularly want to write about the interesting parts of the elemental nations worldbuilding >_>

In other terms, Naruto ninjas are actually cross-classed Wizard/Monk/Psion hybrids. The reason only a relative handful out of thousands are effective is because most of them aren't good enough munchkins to turn that mess into a workable build--note how most of the ones that are also have some absurd template, like magic eyes, inner demons, &c. It's also why so many of the mooks die like chumps: low hit dice, low AC, and they're wearing armor with a decently high spell failure chance, so a lot of their spells fizzle when their spells/day and CL (and PP) are already really low.

General question, how do you guys find new manga/anime to read/watch?
If you're talking about current anime there are a few places you can go to find a complete list like /a/.  I tend to skim the SA thread and maybe one of those 4chan images just to see if there's anything interesting.
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3662363
If you mean in general then I'd suggest just listing the things you're interested in and getting recommendations (here or in another anime thread/forum), people are usually happy to push stuff they like at you.

For Manga. I scroll through the new update lists of the sites and loom at the names. Names can effect my choice. Then I look at the art style. This can and will be the deal breaker. I would read a manga all about a girl struggling to get a boy to notice her if the artstyle doest make me hurl or isnt to, well, bishi. Finally the tags denoting whats in it. These dont outright matter but it can help me avoid over saturation of one style of genere...

for Anime. Pretty much the same as long as the first episode doesnt make me cringe or such. Voice acti g qnd over trope events can cquse the cringes....

That is because Ninja in the Naruto universe is actually the word for Wizard.
I'd heard, from Completely Reliable Sources*, that he originally intended to make them wizards but went with ninja instead for whatever reason. No idea if it's true, but it'd certainly explain some things. Like why the leader was a robed old man with a crystal ball at the very beginning, and why the very first arc was concerned with a magic scroll.
*I don't even remember where, so probably The Internet

This explanation made me giggle.

I actually have a question if someone is actually knowledgeable in the Naruto-verse: From what I understand, every character, all the clans, and all the super-dee-duper ninja magic is contained on one conspicuous island. Does the rest of the civilized world in the Naruto-verse CARE that all this trippy ninja shit is happening on this island, or were all the Ninjas and their clans deliberately exiled there for whatever reason?

I always wondered if there was some kind of racist holocaust in that happened in their chronology, and the rest of the world just put all the Ninjas on boats and told them them to get up, get out, and make their home somewhere else. And that's just how they all wound up on the same Island squabbling with eachother like children and WITH their children.

Build Fighters trivia! The weapons and colorschemes of the GN-Xs used by the opponents in this episode were based off of Mado King Granzort!
