And then there are those of us who used to buy games from GamersGate, who were just confused over the name.

Star Trek: Discovery vs The Orion was another interesting critic-fan divide. Fans were kinda meh about STD, critics hailed it as the second coming. Fans seemed to really like The Orion, critics decried it as godawful. Whether that was due to elitist snobbery or deep pockets I couldn't say (whynotboth.gif?), but it was kind of amusing to read scathing critic reviews insisting that "this is just Star Trek!!!" alongside happy fan reviews that "hey this is more Star Trek!"

Do you mean The Orville?

Its not backroom pandering I promise you that.  Movie reviewers are generally stuck up people who form a distinction between "popular" and "artistic" films.  They tried to make a new oscars category this year of "best popular film" pretty much only so they would have an excuse not to make Black Panther best film.  As opposed to whatever stupid oscarbait bullshit came out this year.  Its like the difference between "genre" books and "literature".
That applies to groups like the Academy, but Reelya already cited loads of films that fall very much on the "popular" side, regarding tone, yet it has been decided among the mainstream critics of Hollywood that this is neither a popular nor an artistic movie.

Although I think there may be a bit of confirmation bias; at least within my bubble, I seem to be seeing mostly the reasonable interpretation that it's not a failure, but neither is it a success of the magnitude that you'd hope for the launch of a franchise.

All I remember about Gamergate is that it made 4chan even more autistic and toxic, and managed to birth a splinter site that makes even that new 4chan look like Tumblr.
So I hate it.
That already existed, it was just thrust into the spotlight because of the gamergate thing being banned from 4chan. By the standards of off-brand 4chan spinoffs, it doesn't stand out in any regard aside from allowing people to make their own boards, reddit style. That difference mostly means that the site has a lot of boards for foreign language discussion, religious discussion, and relatively obscure fandoms and fetishes*. Most of these are very autistic, but not particularly toxic.

Also you and me remember gamergate very differently, where are you getting the mailing list thing?
After googling, it seems the original source is Breitbart, which isn't great but one has to remember that this was before it was like it became around the election. Even so, I'd rather not direct views to them; you can google it yourself if you like.

haha gamergate remember that what a blast from the past some of that retro eThICs iN GAmeS jOURnaliSm
At this point it's been dead for significantly longer than it was ever not dead. I think the people who care about ethics in general got distracted by politics, for the most part.

Gamergate was all about the corruption of gaming journo sites to push specific narratives about different games (usually in pursuit of bribes from publishers), about the selling of positive scores and good spin for kickbacks and access deals. The whole gender blah blah who the fuck cares bit was a literal sideshow instigated by a pair of lying asshole exes in said community of gaming journo sites who tried to hijack outrage. This is why there's such a divide in perception about it: gamers who gave a shit about honest reviews cared about the ethics. Redpillers and SJWs cared about the stupid noise about muh misogyny muh SJWs blah blah fucking blah.
To put it simply, journalists were effective at controlling the media narrative and demonizing their opponents. We see this happening in the political field as well, though in that field there are two factions, providing an illusion of choice, whereas the journalists in this case were united.

*But then, 7chan has had /v/ for years and years, and it doesn't get much more obscure than that.

Also I know this tangent is kinda my fault, but maybe there's some other thread it should be moved to, if people want to continue discussing it? Although I don't know which, and it's news too old to justify a new thread.

(The Orville btw) The weirdest thing is how the critics seem to have done a backflip on that show.

Season 1 at one point had about 26% positive scores from critics, since risen to a glorious 31%

At the very start of season 2, it got 100% positive reviews from every critic, with oddly disproportionate praise for the episode: "this is amazing stuff! it fixes all the problems with season 1! I'm having orgasms in my eyes just watching this!"

Meanwhile, the audience scores are nearly identical between both series. It's like the critics realized that they're irrelevant so they're trying to gaslight everyone that the show has improved (somehow entirely evident from seeing a single episode of S2), rather than the truth that the critics are jumping on the bandwagon now, having got it wrong to start with.

Derp, I indeed meant The Orville.

I swear it was 13% at one point and then climbed a bit*, so this was true even with the first season- the first round of critics hated it, but the next wave realized which way the wind was blowing and tried to hello fellow children.

*I believe we've already established my memory is not great on this front, but scattered internet threads claim 5% and 20% alongside the far more common 26% marker, so it's likely there was indeed an initial bah humbugging of almost flat nothing followed by a grudging rise to almost a third.

Ironically, me and my family loved the Orville season 1, but were less happy with season 2. I don't think starting with back to back "Boridus takes a bathroom break" and "Boridus breaks the ship with gay alien porn" episodes really did them many favors, especially once Best Girl left due to IRL issues and had to be replaced with what appears to be a flash clone ala Halo.

The more recent episodes were good though.

Finding a mech-shaped hole in my heart and having loved Iron-Blooded Orphans, I finally decided to check out another Gundam show. I'm watching Seed, apparently a "remaster," and it's okay I guess. The fights aren't very interesting, the characters are pretty generic, and the art style just looks... off. Every fourth or fifth time they show a given character it seems really off-model and weird. Maybe I'm imagining it. So far it's just okay-ish.

Is there a fan-favorite Gundam series, or one that would be more akin to IBO?

Seed is kinda old and comes from an era when the characters were styled fairly differently, that's probably where the wierdness comes from.

As far as other gundam shows go, Thunderbolt is short but fucking brilliant, both in style and substance (also fairly bleak and dark). Unicorn was very pretty but I presonally couldn't stand the story or characters, it might be for you though, not sure, either way, worth a look imo.

Other than that 00 had a pretty solid first season (but then, just like seed it goes to utter shit and nonsense in the second one) with some neat fights and ideas.

Gundam Build Fighters would be another thing to check out if all you want are cool fights, it's a wildly different story both in setting and tone (which is not neccessarily bad, just different) but it's some lighthearted fun that isn't terribly demanding.

If you're wanting a short, really damn good Gundam series, watch Unicorn. It stands alone pretty well, so it's still okay if you're not really up to speed on that timeline.

I veto 00, Unicorn, and Seed.

I upvote Thunderbolt, and nominate War in the Pocket and 08th MS Team.

Also go watch Dougram, the entire thing is on YouTube and if you like the flavor of the Gundam shows I recommended above and things like Armor Hunter Mellowlink (VOTOMS), then I promise you'll enjoy it if you watch it long enough. If you can't stand that old flavor of mecha like the original Robotech and Mobile Suit Gundam, maybe stay away, but it's a lot more serious and smart about tactics than either of those which was my main problem with them.

The Seed sub-franchise is kind of a weird singularity of recursive production issues and marketing driven decisions, with the remaster on top of that having controversies comparable to the star wars original trilogy special edition.

I'd say to watch 00 or War in the Pocket if you want something good to watch without much background caveates, though they're not necessarily very IBO-ish. The former is IMO the best and most complete of the modern alternate universe series, and is one of the more accessible Gundams out there, and is very thematically tight. The latter meanwhile is very bitesized and pretty much the perfect condensation of the mood of the franchise into a single show. Unicorn is a fun watch but I wouldn't recommend going into it without at the very least reading a short plot summary of the shows that take place before it in the UC timeline. I guess if you really want something IBO esque I'd point to Thunderbolt since personally I felt that did everything IBO tried to do thematically but better executed, but its only the length of a couple movies cause of its webisode release format.

I am up to episode 15 of My Hero Academia, and I have to say, so far Katsuki Bakugou feels like Zuko from Avatar:TLA if he was inferior in every way.
Maybe he'll have a backstory reveal later, but for now he is just annoying, since there does not really seem to be any real reason for him to act this way.

Everyone dislikes Bakugo at first. That is, until he finally grows up, matures, and gets his stand White Album.

Stand, White Album? I know that is a jojo reference, but I don't know what that means in this case.
Besides if it is due to Character Development, would not it be closer to Koichi Hirose getting a new Echoes Act?
