When I was young, a buddy of mine had a relative (don't remember, it was either an uncle or an older cousin) who had a bunch of bootleg anime OVAs on VHS. I found a clue recently that let me track down one of 'em, a four-episode OVA that apparently got a followup at some point. I can't speak to the rest, since I'm pretty sure I only ever saw the first episode. Anyway, it's even weirder than I remember, and definitely very '80s.

Dream Hunter Rem is, in a phrase, Mahou Shoujo Loli Harry Dresden moonlighting as a one-character crossover between Scooby Doo and Yu Yu Hakusho, set in the universe of the Heavy Metal film.

As I recall it, the story of this OVA series is that it was originally intended to be made as a one-episode hentai OVA, but the premise generated enough excitement that the studio shifted gears and made a full, non-pornographic show out of it (at least "full" by the standards of 80s OVAs). That said, the apparent origin shows through from time to time.

Spoiler: *cough* (click to show/hide)

That was about 18 minutes of the first episode, which is 45 minutes long. I won't spoil any more if anyone's intended to go dig it up. Good luck, incidentally; you'll likely either need to buy a VHS off someone or yar har har, 'cause this ain't getting imported any time soon. What a goddamn trip, I'm so glad I found out what this was called.

According to Wikipedia your chronology is only slightly off.

They did release it as a hentai, which subsequently got popular, so they decided to reboot it straight after by re-releasing the first episode as a "special version" which is cleaned up. So the hentai version (listed as episode 0 on wikipedia) should be floating around too.

Fair enough, I was working on what my buddy's relative said about it the better part of twenty years ago. And he may well have been lying, since we were, y'know something like eight or nine. Might have actually had the uncut original in his collection too, hah.

e: I went back and did a spot of research to dig up the original episode 1, and it turns out that it was basically identical. They cut and edited maybe ~45 seconds of masturbation and naughty tentacles to make it suitable for TV broadcast (since anime could get away with full frontal nudity on daytime TV waaaay before Highschool DxD became famous for it). No wonder it became a cult hit, it was more crazy 80s art project with a bit of lewdness than repurposed hentai.

I mean, it's been out for a while. But it's kinda shit tbh, I didn't get trough the first episode before turning it off in disgust, and from what I've read of the following ones, it didn't really improve past that.

Unrelated, this morning I remembered this one season anime I saw while I was in highschool, think it dates back to 2010 or so, possibly earlier. Basically a swimming club comedy where most of the comedy is of the fanservice variety, tho, taken to stupid silly extremes at times. I remember the main girl had green hair and a distinct swimming style, but I can't remember the name of the damn thing. This ring any bells for anyone?

I didn't get through the first episode before turning it off in disgust.

Wow, that’s a heck of a reaction. It clearly doesn’t have the same animation and budget behind it, that’s obvious. So it capitalised on a great first season by releasing something a bit more... standard shounen, doesn’t make it dogshit, just less world-shattering.

That being said I’m now gonna bitch hypocritically about Rising of the Shield Hero. Isekai seem to come in two discrete categories. 1. The protagonist is the best, and they are given insane power from the beginning with or 2. The protagonist is just as strong as or less strong than others in the world, and have to use their wits, or game the system in order to get ahead.
I really, really like the second one, a la Log Horizon. I am very slow to enjoy the former, a la sword art online, but I can get into them happily.
I find really, really distasteful when they pretend to be one and then switch to another. Shield Hero started with levels of adversity depressing enough to chase off all of the fairycatchers, but now it’s gotten so bright that the mushroom farmers like me are finding it difficult to persist. Suddenly he’s amazing at everything, and the convoluted manual smithing he’s been doing from the beginning has turned out to be the best way to do things and blah blah.
It’s getting to me.

I’ve heard that the latest season has some of the most contrived shounen in it, so I haven’t checked too much out. Any recommendations would be awesome

Has anyone watched Ingress on Netflix? If so, what do you think?

I mean, Anime and Netflix are both fairly hit-or-miss, so...

Yeah, I thought that the level of shallow, naive wish fulfillment was really intense in Shield Hero, to the point of quickly making the show unenjoyable. Even the very beginning of the show with the false accusations and unfair discrimination laid on the protagonist, that itself is a kind of wish fulfillment, in that it panders to the Victim Complex held by the losers and lowlife otakus of society.

Yeah, it's more notable for its historical influence on the genre than its literary merit, and the whole genre is already very much not known for literary merit.

Gods, yes. Isekai is known for being schlock before and to an order of magnitude greater than anything else. Shield hero is in no way an exception on that front.
