I secommend Ergo Proxy. It is likely my favourite animu. It has all the things you asked for. And a cute side kick that isn't annoying.

Yuki Yuna is a Hero
Kanata no Kyoukai

Both are really good, beautiful anime with good balance between SoL shenanigans and pitched battles against weird monsters. Yuyuyu is to Madoka Magica what TTGL was to Evangelion, to put it simply, and KnK/Beyond the Boundary is just really good and atmospheric.

Plus, both come stocked with a good selection of waifus, which never hurts. :V

What was TTGL to Evangelion, you'd say?

From what I've heard, less-serious project made by the same studio sorta to unwind after the edgier project.

Evangelion: shounen with robots and PTSD -> TTGL: shounen with robots and THE DRILL THAT WILL PIERCE THE HEAVENS

Have not seen YYiaH, but I guess it's the same relationship with PMMM then?

I don't think it's a good analogy really. Yuki Yuna is more like a cross between one of those "four cute schoolgirls after-school club" animes and Madoka. Sure, Yuki Yuna has some wacky battle scenes (psychidelic stuff done in CGI) but it's actually less wacky than the animation in Madoka. Madoka is in fact more "TTGL" than Yuki Yuna, hands down. Personally, I'd call Yuki Yuna the "poor man's Madoka". There's a reason Yuki Yuna isn't in fact all that well-known (note that Madoka has 8.3 on IMDB vs 6.6 for Yuki Yuna. It's not a "TTGL version" of Madoka, it's just a much worse version).

These shows really aren't "TTGL-like" at all. Madoka is Sailor Moon meets the bleak existentialism of Evangelion, and Yuki Yuna is effectively the same thing, but from more of a "schoolgirl quartet" sort of setting. They don't have the escalation or rule of cool element of TTGL or similar.

If you want anything like "magical girls meets Gurren Lagann", you really need to just go for Symphogear.

I make the assumption that someone who doesn't like fanservice doesn't want waifus.

Although something like Bunny-girl senpai manages to still be an awesome anime despite a reasonable amount of both.
That title steered me away for far longer than the producers were likely hoping.

Cannon busters on netflix... The young man's cowboy bebop?

Edit: re husbandos, I enjoyed the likes of rokuhoudou and rakugou an uncomfortable amount and I am now worried

That is amazing, though yeah unrelated (the character's great, the show and abridged show are great, he's not my type though).

I haven't been on in a while so I don't know if the anime My Love Story was discussed before. I just wanted to say it's the first anime I've ever seen that in one episode, Me and My Friends, made me both cry and snort milk out from my nose. A friend had recommended it some time ago and I am very happy to see it now.

Yep. BTW, the untranslated title is just "Me story!!" (Ore Monogatari!!). The point being that "ore" being the most masculine possible way to say "me", and they left out the "no" from "Ore no" (which would be "my"). The word "love" does not appear anywhere in the title.

The point of the original title is that it's ungrammatical and macho. "My love story" doesn't correctly capture that at all. It's a complete translation fail.

10$ says Chris Redfield could punch a moon fragment back into orbit.

Probably would have an 80's one liner instead of a song about friendship, though.

Are there any resident evil animes? Not counting the CGI movie they released a while back.
