Slings are for early on only, and blowguns don't do damage (Or more specifically, I guess, needles don't do damage). Not sure about bows/crossbows, but the other two are strictly support only. Of course, a few curare needles in a blowgun can ruin just about anybody's day.

Slings will work all game. I guess they kind of lose some flare late, though. If you have the ammo, I'm confident a 3-runer could use slings and win easily.

(long) Bows are amazing.

Xbows are slightly less amazing, but still great because... ranged.

Javelins are good, especially early on, and there's no reason not to throw a javelin if you don't have a ranged attack.

A highly-enchanted blowgun with very good Throwing skill will work even on extremely late-game critters. They're extremely useful, especially if you have a god who gifts ammo.

A speed branded blowgun does remain useful even in the late game, assuming you have access to the appropriate branded ammo. I am not so sure about slings though, primarily due to the lack of base damage. Longbows are no doubt amongst the best endgame ranged weapons, if not the best one,  for that very reason (base damage = 13, if you add in the arrow).

Blowguns of speed don't exist except for artefacts, though.

Running a fighter. Made it to the Lair for the first time, dove to Lair:8.

I've reached the medically sound conclusion that Maces & Flails is a fuckawesome skill.

M&F is weird to me. You can get some awesome early-game drops for it, but later on... I mean, unless you're a large race, you kind of plateau at the Great Mace, which is kind of lackluster in comparison to the end-tier stuff of the other weapon types.

Aren't Demon Whips supposed to be one of the major endgame paths for M&F?

(Also, I like having shields waaaay too much. Deflection is delicious.)

Early-game M&F isn't even really that great. And yes, demon whips are pretty good.

demon whips and holy scourges have a really high base damage compared to other relatively quick weapons and the only maces & flails that can be considered an upgrade are mostly two handed. there is one exception though: an evening star. very early on a demon whip/ holy scourge will hit it's max speed and have way more accuracy than it needs. If you continue to raise the M&F skill you should keep your eyes out for a good evening star to replace it.

str weight is vastly different on the two weapons but str weight mostly only affects accuracy and by the time you can use an evening star at max speed, you wont be missing much anything.

TL:DR demon whips good early on > upgrade to evening star once you have around 15 M&F skill. go for the biggest (highest dam) mace you can wield if your going for two handers

Except then you're pumping more XP into a skill in the hopes that you get one of the rarest weapon types in the entire game (eveningstar), and for not much benefit at all. A demon whip only takes 11 skill to get to maximum speed, and an eveningstar takes... 16 skill? Not a huge difference, but still significant, and again, you cannot even remotely count on finding an eveningstar anyway.

Strictly speaking, they do the same amount of damage per turn with maximum speed, but with a difference of 2 inherent accuracy (not super-important). The eveningstar will still do more damage most of the time because it does it in fewer hits so it'll be better at bypassing AC, but I'm not sure how much that would matter, and some brands are actually better with faster weapons anyway.

The idea that you'll even have a "demon whip" early on is pretty damn dubious, anyway.

At any rate, a holy scourge is definitely better than either of them.

Is there any reason you would ever choose faster leveling over higher Attributes...?

Depends on which attributes, how much of them, and the difference in leveling speed.

Faster leveling is actually kinda nice. I'd rather level 10% faster then have 5 more str smacked onto my fighter.

Yeah me too. Especially in the late midgame it can be daunting to face stuff like V:8 and Zot and be level 23 or something. There's a psychological aspect I think to "feeling beefier", in addition to more HP MR etc.
