*Shrug* I did some tinkering in Wizard Mode plus reading in the Wiki....

From XP Levels: Stats (Small contributions to damage/accuracy and stealth where applicable), HP, Magic Resist, some spell levels

From Skill Levels: Weapon Damage, Accuracy, Speed from weapon skills; pretty much all your defenses from defense skills; spell levels from Spellcasting; spell success rate from everything

Plus, if you're any of a number of races, you get bonus HP.

I'm assuming you meant aptitudes rather than attributes? There's always trade-offs for races with good aptitudes. They may have bad aptitudes in critical areas, low HP, or quirks like slow speed and inability to use certain gods or items. It's not really an either-or decision, you have to look at the whole package. I think most of the fast leveling species are desirable because they are versatile, having neutral or decent aptitudes, rather than some amazing and some awful.

Any verdict on throwing?  I like to collect hand axes and spam them out at large enemies.  If I get <of returning> then I definitely go into throwing a lot.

Javelins can be pretty good, but they'll eventually break and can't be enchanted anymore. Throwing also affects blowguns, though, which can be quite good, especially for needle-stabbing.

Slow leveling is a detriment, but isn't important enough to really impact choice of race much.

If you're melee, then 1 or two skill in throwing and throwing everything you find (except maybe at those that can throw back :/) do help a lot. Later you can blowgun some dangerous/fleeing (not in latter version though) foo.

The Ziggurat Sprint is rather lame with a MiFi of Jivya; banishment and the last floor aside, having a jelly spawned in the first floor (three 999 ammo stacks) means you'd have to go out of your way to die for most of the sprint.

On attributes, while it is there, their impact on weapon damage and accuracy is rather secondary (blade hands aside), though that is obviously not the case for intelligence.

Except then you're pumping more XP into a skill in the hopes that you get one of the rarest weapon types in the entire game (eveningstar), and for not much benefit at all. A demon whip only takes 11 skill to get to maximum speed, and an eveningstar takes... 16 skill? Not a huge difference, but still significant, and again, you cannot even remotely count on finding an eveningstar anyway.

Strictly speaking, they do the same amount of damage per turn with maximum speed, but with a difference of 2 inherent accuracy (not super-important). The eveningstar will still do more damage most of the time because it does it in fewer hits so it'll be better at bypassing AC, but I'm not sure how much that would matter, and some brands are actually better with faster weapons anyway.

The idea that you'll even have a "demon whip" early on is pretty damn dubious, anyway.

At any rate, a holy scourge is definitely better than either of them.

depending on your play style for the character, you either want to get M&F up enough to have a useful melee attack or you're relying on your weapon to kill the enemy as fast as possible. If it's the former then yes, getting M&F up to 11 for a demon whip or holy scourge is fine, you have other places to put that xp like casting spells, evoking or invocations. This is because your a hybrid character.

For the latter, you're going to want to get M&F up past 16, probably sooner than later. the accuracy and damage increase from the skill is more than worth the xp.

once weapons hit the min delay, they are all equally fast (the only exception is a quick blade) and the only difference becomes enchantments, brands and base damage (also str weight (not a big deal) and damage type (is this even applicable to anything other than hydras?).

A melee focused character using M&F as a large chunk of their offence should not stop training M&F at 11, especially because they don't think a decent evening star will show up.

---------------------------------------
as to Girlinhat's question. Throwing is an excellent skill to have at least 3-5 skill levels in if your not going to train another ranged skill. keep in mind "of returning" doesn't "always" work, just most of the time.

Not true. A weapon's min delay is equal to half of its base delay (rounded down) or .7 turns, whichever is smaller. Sabres are the only outlier here, having .5 delay despite 1.2 base.

In other words, all the big twohanders have .7 min delay, but anything with 1.3 base or less will drop to .6/.5. Quickblade goes down to .3. Also, for odd base delays you actually need one additional skill level to have max weapon speed, so you need 12 skill to swing a demon whip at .5 consistently. Demon whips/sacred scourges are .2 faster than evenstars, thus evenstars really aren't that great by comparison.

Some questions:

How is the long-term viability of crossbows? Slings? Blowguns?

Anyone have experience with the Arcane Marksman? Thoughts on recommended race-weapon combos?
Replying to a slightly old message just to chime in my two bits:

Slings are nice because you can fire them from behind a shield (any shield) without getting delay - used that to good effect with a large shield-using fighter. Also, don't discount the damage potential of sling bullets - a stack of silver sling bullets will take a chunk out of orbs of fire.

Bows are great for the early-mid levels, but after that I find myself constantly running low on ammo.

X-Bows are amazing mid-late, because you'll always be running into yaktaurs for ammo, and they've got some excellent brands (piercing can clear entire corridors at once.)

I've only used blowguns in the early game, but they've saved me more than once killing an out of depth ogre early on (it's great fun getting two or three levels all at once when something falls over dead to poison.)

Edit: Annnd, since I'm on a new page, I just thought that I'd wish all you guys an excellent tournament run. I was playing for my other forum (Ars Technica) and our team finished 26th to your 23rd.

Anyone posted that there is a free (and almost permissions-free) DC:SS app/port on the Android store now?? :P Been playing it like mad since I found it.. Handles well too.. (If you have a problem where you can't see the most current two or three new messages the solution is that you can grab the screen ((above the keyboard)) and move it up and down)..

Just noticed in the new version (0.12) that there seems to be a lot more arrows dotted around the place.  Played an Arcane Marksman and before I got to DL3, I had 77 arrows and found a long-bow - then got splatted by an ogre after opening a door.

And they got rid of the Stalker........now what do I do with all my Confusion potions?

My first win ever.  I started off worshipping okawaru, but he didnt gift me any high damage weapons so I ended up getting about a million bad mutations and had to switch to jiyva.  Bulled my way throught zot 5 with a combination of massive tankiness+resists and some berserk gloves I found.

I've started this Ogre Berserker yesterday. I've been getting a LOT of good items, and now he can basically kill most things in one hit now. And I'm loving that GDR.

Very good run so far, I really hope I don't get over confident and forget I have control teleport.
