Learning blade hands on a troll sounds painful!

Could someone more knowledgeable help? running another fairly successful l19 Naga Stalker of Chei (v.10.2), eventually, my worship of Chei will pay off when I get blade hands for end game.

Current stats: 24/37/27

Problem is I can't find a spellbook to learn blade hands.

In the meanwhile I've been fighting with a +4+6 electric whip (maces at 12) and a short sword of protection for emergencies and water (short blades at 12, stabbing at 11, stealth at 22). My venom magic is high and I have poisoner's handbook, but once again, this makes me worried about late game survival.

I am feeling like I should upgrade to a better weapon: the candidates are:

a ranart great mace (flame, SInv--is flame effective against demons/dragons?)
or
a +0 +3 Great axe of freezing
or keep looking...

Hope wiser minds can help me pick

Your worship won't pay off.  The +10 base damage you get from Chei's stat bonuses is easily outweighed by the fact that you can't haste (+50% damage) as a Chei follower, to say nothing of the horribly slow movement.

Slouch is ok but other than that Chei is pretty much purely a challenge god.

Great axe isn't a weapon so I can't help you on that choice.

Aww I really thought Chei was good choice for a slow naga fellow. It is a battleaxe of freezing. I also have a scimitar of freezing.

It'll make Slouch very powerful, but going Chei with a Naga really just makes a problem into a crippling hindrance.

But hell, if you enjoy it, be my guest. It does make you a pretty insane force when you don't move.

The thing is even if you stay immobile you are still weaker, because you can't haste.  This means you have 33% fewer actions - attacks or spells - than almost any non-Chei worshiper towards the endgame.

Isn't Chei the god of choice for Ubernagas and the like, though? Since casting in Crystal Plate is presumably easier with the Chei stat gains.

edit : Though I suppose even then there's the chance of misclicking and taking a step letting enemies take 50 turns to beat your glacier-paced ass.

Yes, Chei is still bad.  Don't listen to Reddit and webtiles dudes.  Even on non-casters I'm constantly using some form of haste in serious fights and that's not even in extended.

No.  Losing haste is a major issue even if you ignore the movement speed (and you can't, really - being faster than all enemies is a huge advantage in a zig).  An int boost definitely isn't going to increase your damage by 50%.

I've tried a Troll Fighter run in "Crawl Light" (latest version on that page)

The differences between the original branch and this variant are quite fun, it makes Crawl more coffee breaker than a very long dedicacement (as it's shorter and faster).
A big one is that you don't have to play the hunger (replaced by a glow system for spell casters) and identify game.

And many more changes :
https://github.com/dtsund/crawl-light/blob/cl-trunk/crawl-ref/docs/changelog.txt

I have not yet gone very far, but i like the changes and the faster pace introduced by them.

Thanks for all the advice, I do spam slouch a lot. I guess I'll try ash or something next time.

Spoiler: Hairsnake (click to show/hide)

I like Chei mechanics. It's just that Chei's abilities suck except for slouch pretty much. I'd trade one of those 3 step from times type abilities for an effective mass slow (which would sort of equal a haste for you if it landed on all visible) or something. I don't think I used any abilities but slouch on purpose.

I managed to get inside the orc fort with this char and slouched. Somehow I ended up right inside and the orcs weren't aware of me as I didn't get smited a bunch. Maybe I just slithered in, can't remember. This was after a few tries where an orc managed to spot me and shouted and I changed tactics. I'm fairly certain it was a translocation now that I remember that. Perhaps one of the few characters able to translocate directly into the orc fort without having to fear certain death from being chain smited before being able to eliminate all the priestly orcs. After those are gone and turned into an undead horde the badly wounded tough orcs like the sorcerors, high priests or knights can sample curare needles and a poison spit before another translocation if they aren't distracted by their suddenly zombie pals. Or at least I think that's what I did. Been longer than I can remember small details like whether or not I used animate dead or not after slouch.

I save scum to avoid death once I get a character to temple or so. Also shamefully to avoid really terrible mutations I brought upon myself with a potion if I don't have a cure. Extra shamefully sometimes I even save scum to get good mutations when I'm using a combination I haven't used before. Expect to die tons as a naga before you meet Chei as they seem pretty weak at low levels. Once I powered up through Chei I've had a fairly easy time of it though, by poking stuff from a distance that my zombies are distracting. Before the demon trident I got from a named I can't recall the name of, I think I was using a +2 +3 spear.

I tried a felid berserker for a change of pace. No weapons, armor or wands! That actually means you have enough identify scrolls for jewel[le]ry, potions and scrolls. Also, I found that cat claws count for Stabbing, and don't slash -- hydras were no problem. I died in Lair:7, for my second-best game ever (24000+ -- I'm still new at this.)

Every time I change species/backgrounds, I learn something about the game. A Brother in Arms cleared out a roomful of jellies for me. And at the end, I should have been even more careful to haul a death yak upstairs, and pause after every round to see how I was doing. Overconfidence in melee is my number one death-trap.

There's always something new you can learn about this game.

I just started a troll monk, And learned that shields and unarmed combat actually go pretty nice with each other. And as far as hydras go (troll claws do cut heads) it's not that bad just using any flaming weapon (In my case a falchion) to deal with them.

In this one game however, My only regret is not starting the game as a berserker.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also luck is a important feature in the game to learn about.

As well as using joke names seem to have a effect of sorts on luck.
