It's not entirely unreasonable to want to set your character's gender.  Although it doesn't really matter.

I'd rather they continue to add new gods and shit rather than draw every single doll option as the other gender. I mean, you even agree it doesn't matter, so why should they bother at all?
I'm just saying it's not completely unreasonable to want it.

Hmm... if it's moddable, I guess you could just redraw it yourself.

Oh ruddy hell...

Just press the hyphen key, dammit!  You can customize your doll completely from that menu.  The male and female versions of each race are located right next to each other.  Hell, you could even choose to be a troll who looks like a halfling and has wings!

Play the ASCII version if manboobs bother you so much.

GRAHHHHHHHHHHH!

My best character so far was killed by a few Orc Priests.
He started as a Troll Berserker, and ended as a Level 6 Troll worshiping (whatever that guy who gives you cards). My card god gave me 2 decks of summoning before I died. I had an Electric Elven Whip, which worked really well for me, until I died. I died because I was bashing people with my deck of cards. By the time I noticed this and ran and started spamming summons, it was almost too late. Until I spawned an aggressive summon.  Note to self, don't use cards if not necessary.

I'd beg to differ, especially concerning decks of summoning.  The chance of a failure is remarkably low, and even if there is a hostile summon you can just draw another card and, chances are, you'll get something to tie up the hostile.  Besides, frequent card use pleases Nemelex.

But, uhh...  Nemelex isn't particularly great for trolls.  Trolls have got poor invocations and absolutely abysmal evocations, so you'll essentially be throwing points away on something that doesn't even really play into a troll's strengths (namely, ripping people to shreds with their claws.  Trolls aren't particularly versatile).

I choose it because I thought it would be awesome to have a deck of cards.
And I was almost dead due to the smashing with cards things, so the hostile summon killed me right away. The orc priests were throwing spells too.

Really, if trolls have bad invocations, most gods are pretty poor choices. Trog would be best though.

Yeah, I think so too. Little late for that now :D

Been playing this for about a week now, and my best dude so far was plain human... Choas Knight. Got quite deep, and didn't get screwed over by his god. Did get screwed over by a teleport trap and small army of orcs. And a friggin ANGEL.

Recently been knocking around with a ghoul monk, and it's awesome to not worry about finding food. One thing that bugs me, though, is that it's been giving an absurd number of 'glowing' and 'runed' weapons, when I don't use them.

You can still throw them. A +3+3 dagger is a nice ranged weapon.

Remarkably low is a little misleading.  I lost a couple good Nemelexites early to hostile dancing weapons which are much faster than you, hit for 20+ and have big EV.  Decks of summoning are thus not the best for emergency use until evocations and Nemelex piety are up.

Oh hell yeah, page 90! And yeah, I've waited three days just so I can post this in the beginning of a page instead of in the end of a previous one  :-[

Doesn't matter anyway. At last I can announce SCREW YOU, CRAWL! I WON! WOOOOO!!!

Everyone, meet Jesus.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ol' Jesus here had about 56 AC somewhere from the second third of the game onward. I actually found a gold dragon hide and enchanted it myself rather than finding a finished GDA, got gifted a rather nice randart Battleaxe with +4 AC which I used the most. I also got a lajatang of speed and wasted quite a lot of enchant weapon scrolls on it, not to mention a ridiculous amount of exp on Staves on the presumption that yeah, Lajatang of speed is rock I had somehow acquired my previous games. Turns out, no, it isn't.

I never found good gloves or helmet, but as a compensation I found both boots of speed and of levitation. Of course, as soon as I had them it turned out that Elf:7 isn't the typical Graven-death moat but a rather normal entrance. It did necessitate a few swift retreats, but not once did I fall below 80 hp. This guy was a murderengine. I went toe to toe with four orbs of fire and still finished with something like 50 hp. I'd never seen Zot before so I didn't really know what to expect, but more about that in a while.

I want to attract attention to this sucker : the amulet of Saviour (around neck) {rMut rF++ rC+ rN+ Int-2}, which singlehandedly lead me through Slime, the Abyss and Zot. Check my resists for more info :)

This was originally supposed to be a four-rune win as I was worried about being unable to survive in the Abyss, but some nice Zot-ians promptly decided to show me the error of my ways. It turned out that no, there is nothing in the Abyss that could hurt me, too. I found the rune by accident, I decided to take a sharp turn at one point without any reason and behind some metal walls - BOOM, abyssal rune.

The one thing that managed to piss me off majorly were the Yellow Draconians in zot. Well I don't have rCorrosion nor anything to replace it dammit! My boots of speed were something like -5 at one point, luckily there were enough enchant armour scrolls in there.

That's about it, actually. I'm sooo proud of having my first win be a five-rune one. I can go play something with actual graphics now. Dragon Age, here I come!

Congrats. I still haven't gotten a single rune yet.
