Anyway, it didn't matter so much...i died :p
I should have been more careful between the moment it begins to be harder and when you can die at each emergency situation.

I HAD FUN, though. I have to admit :)

I'll try again !

EDIT : I found Sigmund at the beginning of the 2nd Lvl.
I managed to flee, thx to the title of this post :)

Jiyva is just a game of juggling your pile of mutations until she swings back into your favor with them. If there's anywhere else you can kill stuff to force more mutations, you should probably do that. Maybe even get yourself banished and just sit in Abyss:1.

The idea there is not that trolls are easy wins, but they give you a ticket past the early game. The early game is an enormous hurdle, and dying over and over and over again to packs of gnolls on d:3 does a horrible job of letting new players explore the game. Yes, part of the idea of the game is learning what is and isn't a threat and how to respond, but that's like expecting someone just learning to play piano to get straight into practicing chords.

I started off with trolls and ghouls since they didn't have the problem of starving to death when trying to wield a cursed non-edged weapon; I agree with the idea that they're a bad recommendation to start. (Though I profess a fondness for Qaz or statueform trolls.)

Instead of that, I'd go with minotaur fighters for the basics, centaur hunters to emphasize the value of ranged combat and fleeing, and felid berserkers to highlight the viability of unconventional builds and to force them to use items. Not sure what I'd use for magic or stealth; I'm weak with both despite trying to get a statueform octopode going for a while.

Gargoyle Earth Elementalists and Draconian Fire Elementalists are decent casters. I'm terrible at them, though - I've only gotten all the way to Vault once with one.

My second win ever! And my highest scoring so far.

Couple of notes:
I used evocations a lot less than expected.
summons were handy in a few places
I got malmuted a total of four times, I think
it took me far fewer deep dwarf runs to win than it took me hill orc, and I still haven't won with demonspawn, though I've played them far more than DD.
RNG in terms of item accumulation makes a big difference in my level of success. maybe that means I am a bad player, idk.
finally: the name of my crawler is how many crawls I have done on this version. I think I did about a hundred cralws before I got this computer, but those are lost to time.
So my winrate currently sits at about 2/500-ish.
p.s. I was tempted a couple of times to run some higher branches: diving deeper into the abyss (at lvl 18) and trying out tomb; but I didn't because I want the wins before I start exploring 'post end game."

I took that scourge off an angel in the abyss  8)

I rarely used it. my main weapons were my +9 war axe (enchanted up from +4- later branded with freezing) and my +5 broad axe of slicing. I figured the war axe of freezing would come in handy for the orbs of fire, but the broad axe consistently did more damage quicker.

I also noticed that I very rarely used Mahkleb's abilities. I expected to summon his servants a few times in Zot. I completely forgot about them in Zot:5, though i did use my Sack of Spiders and box of beasts there, as well as a regular summon scroll.

My last nearly successful run, last week, I had boots of running. that was the one where I reported nuking V:5 from the stairs. I got the orb, and panicked when the first pan lord showed up. Thought i could get to the stairs before it caught me. ah well, so close on that one.

Just had a summoner that found the 'Fen Folio' which had summon hydra and summon Forest. Just the most incredible combo ever, and was a really interesting playstyle.

If you haven't had a go with Summon Forrest, it's amazing. It makes for really quick work of any of the more open spaced maps, and gets rid of a lot of summoning tedium (cast it once, all the weaker things die instantly)

I just went for the abbysal rune for the fist time.

I think I got incredibly lucky.

I found downstairs to abyss 2 as soon as I entered abyss 1. the downstairs to abyss 3 took longer - I had to explore about five tiles to find them.

When I descended to abyss 3, there were a couple of hive walls visible. inside the hive were bees, a coule wretched stars, the queen bee, cuple of ugly things, and the rune.

I found 2 exits shortly thereafer.

Overall, I killed twenty-six creatures the entire foray.

((level 26 deep dwarf fighter of Mahkleb))

edit: first five rune victory, and third win overall.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Notes: Slime 6 was the roughest part, what with so many corroding and mutating slimes. I was at 52 corrosion at one point. I also was down to about 15% health, but blink and heal wounds were plenty to deal with that. I almost had to leave and come back for TRJ, but was able to kill him with a couple lightning bolts.

I don't use rods as much as I think I will with DDFi.

I never use Mahkleb's invocations.

I really struggled to find resistances this round. In the end, I decided it wasn't necessary, except a rank in rNeg(+DD's intrnsic rank), some rMagic, and rMut and rCorr.
I think I could have had slightly higher AC with my plate armor and body slots, but again, their intrinsics weren't worth worrying about it.

Finally, I am starting to see why 'good' players of this game find DD overpowered. 3 of my top 4 characters, and 2 of my 3 wins, are DD and I have only been playing them a couple of weeks. I'm a terible player, so I'll still use them.

up next, I am going to continue trying to improve as a spellcaster or stealth character. I like the +5 in stealth of the spriggan, though last time I played one, I had 5 skill and a ring of stealth and still was getting spotted instantly by orcs and stuff.

I was just struck (while in the Elven hall) by a sword of distortion and sent for a few round in the Abyss - 4.

that was really really hard, because i was the TP mutation on top of the natural abyss mutation.

I managed to get out and survive, though. This game is amazing, really :)

To be fair, from my personal experience, teleportits tends to actually be beneficial in the abyss. There's nothing like being chased by a monstrosity that you have no hope to kill before mercifully being teleported away from it and given another chance. Without it, you might end up running into a dead end before that could happen.

That's part of the problem with stealth - it's never a sure thing, and even really high up it doesn't stop some stuff just happening to see you. Basically, it's not something you can base a character round, but it can be that particular characters 'edge'.

Hexes did get an overhaul a while back IIRC, where more monsters became vulnerable to them and nearly all became possible to get with them sometimes. This goes great with stealth - confusion (or EH) + stabbing just obliterates stuff.

Yeah hexes are great for early-mid game, and with a heavier investment you can get a 15-rune win, but I'd say it's not the easiest playstyle.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You reflexively headbutt those who attack you in melee.
You have a pair of horns on your head.
You are partially covered in thin metallic scales. (AC +2)
You possess an exceptional clarity of mind.
You are clumsy. (Dex -2)
You sometimes yell uncontrollably at your foes.

It was a nightmare, Depths are a nightmare, life is heck.

At the start I had no elemental resistances, and I had to kite and rest nearly every single enemy, despite being a boss minotaur with PDA and boots of running.

Oka gifted me that sweet randart Triple sword early on, which patched things a bit, but holy moly is Depths frightening. Every single enemy deals extreme physical or elemental damage, a ton of things are faster than you and it's just not a nice place.

I'll probably give the Abyss a quick try, but without regen I'm relatively certain it's not going to go well, so I might have to go for Lair runes after all. I could swap to TSO and do Crypt->Tomb->Pan, but... eh

What a strange and beautiful world I beheld, but dangerous too, I was certain. And I was friendless and homeless. And so I prayed.
"Hear me, exalted spirits. Hear me be you gods or devils, ye who hold dominion here. I am a wizard without a home. I am a wanderer seeking refuge."

Spriggan assassin is making me angry. I don't have the patience to run away from everything, and they are so squishy. Man, going there from DDFi was a huge mistake. I've made it through lair once I think with SpAs, and just get so frustrated. Time to find someting else, maybe.

I suppose, since i find stealth and spellcasters to be too squishy, and ranged too tedious, what with the constant running back to pick up spent missiles, that i might just go for longer wins with melee. I don't know though, any suggestions?

Try a MiFi, they're really good. And/or try worshipping Oka with any decent melee build - his constant item gifts are extremely useful. Or go with Uskayaw - he lets you stun lots of enemies at once and then telefrag single annoying targets.

That said, here are some more general suggestions for longer game:
