 - Level 7.9 Invocations

As you can see, I did the basic skilling I described earlier.  I just got my hands on dragon armor at the bottom of lair.  When I get a few more EA scrolls I'll swap from the quicksilver to probably the swamp dragon armor, unless an IDA or FDA shows up in the mean time.

I seem to have a habit of generating dumps while under heroism, so my defenses are a little inflated, but then again, I cast heroism for tough fights, so maybe it's fair to include it.

Good equipment, and there are a few jewelry shops with rC, rF, and rPois rings available.
Generally I don't worry about walking around with resistances, I typically just swap in rings as needed and use something generic in the mean time.

Train fighting Antioch, fighting. Only fighting, if Finesse is at single figure fail rate, otherwise pump Invo first, then fighting. Once fighting is up around 16ish, maybe then get some dodging. If 195 HP is good, 245 is even better. Also, you are with Okie, so training UC beyond 22 was definitely not necessary, in fact 21 would have been plenty (you are spamming Heroism left right and centre, aren't you?).

Once you are clearing V5/Zot, you can worry about unnecessarily training UC beyond 22, but before then, its not a very good Okie investment. In fact, out of UC, Dodging, Armour, Throwing and Fighting skills (all the skills your troll needs), only one skill is better at Level 27 than at level [22 plus Heroism], and guess which one it is? Thats right, our old criminally underskilled Fighting skill, whose bonus HP part is not added under Heroism.

Meanwhile, I managed to bring my GnEn home , so thats nice. Newnew Gnolls are kidna weird fun - I tried some robes on on V5, and could cast level 8 spells with some wiz bonus, but decided i would rather be a heavilty armour caster of level 6 spells. Hot damn there are lots of good level 6 spells, but Simulacrum, occasionally assisted by Kiku's delivery service and Shadow creatures, was my bread and butter "oh shit, heres an orb of fire, lets killdudes spell".

They are definitely a lot easier than oldnew Gnolls with their horrible 7/7/7 stats. I suspect they will tone the Newnew gnoll aptitudes down a fraction.

Heh, vogon it looks like we just value fighting and dodging very differently.

I'll have to download the offline version and do some fsims to check out how it looks with various dodging/fighting spreads.  It seems we generally agree on everything else, although you seem to bank more on finding a fairly early dragon hide and avoid training much dodging early on.

You can see my current troll dump on the previous page, skilled just the way I describe, just having cleared lair and orc.  I'd be interested to wizmode up that character in an offline version, then move the skills around a little to see what happens.  Like I said before, there's no way what I'm doing is optimal, I'm just training in easy ratios I don't have to pay much attention to.

I also wonder if maybe a higher HP pool seems less valuable to me than it does to you because of the way I tend to go on autopilot.  I need to be able to survive after having my HP knocked almost to 0, because red HP is what usually snaps me out of autopilot (assuming it's not the inventory screen after I'm already dead).  At that point I've already wasted much of the benefit fighting is going to give me for that fight.

Either way, antioch's got a good troll going, and if he takes either of our advice I'm sure he'll do well.  Looks like he'll do well if he ignores us too, hehe.

Vogon, how do you skill your transmuters? I have a hell of a time getting them past the early game.  The whole time I feel like I'm just trying to catch up, at least until I get spider form reasonably easy to cast.  At that point it's usually just the typical mistakes that kill me.

we value fighting differently for trolls, and probably ogres :)

Sludge Elf Transmuter was my fave combo when I was still an actual noob. I killed a lot of SETm (129) and never got past level 11 (I don't have any bot foo, and am kinda curious what my win rate is starting from the game after my first win.... I was sooo bad when I was a noob, and stayed a noob for a looong time :)  )

These days, I play DG, DS, Dr, Hu and Mf Transmuters, and still haven't got further than level 18. So I suck at transmuters. Terribly. I have more online games of Tm than any other background. 417 online stiffs :-/. It took me a long while to crack the SpEn code, but my Tm record is just embarrassing.

I go UC, hit level 3, train Transmutations until spider form is at 25% fail, then go back to UC to maybe 10? Then go dodging (EV to 30 in spider form), then fighting, then learn iceform, train ice to 3 or 4, then transmut some more until Iceform is at 25% fail, then more fighting, or stealth, or invo, or evo, or summoning, or whatever.... I don't rush to blade hands, I am strong believer in ice form. But I don't spam enough snakes, and die, a lot.

So if you have any tips, please go ahead :)

Hah, sounds pretty similar to my experience. I've won a couple TMs, but that was by throwing 100s of them against the wall until a couple stuck.

o7 Downloaded Stone Soup because of this thread. Just finished playing my 1st crawl. I died-But it was pretty fun all in all. I got to the lair and found out about Hydra's. Ended up dealing with them by use of 3 things: 1, summoning scrolls 2, a lightning rod 3, (My favorite) an ability from the god I ended up choosing. I'm not sure what his name was, but he made this kind of "Elemental storm" happen continually around my character, and I could use one of his abilities to turn the clouds made from the storm into creatures. It wasn't very RELIABLE as I was training in pretty much just melee skills, but I found just backing off and spamming it worked well enough. With a fire elemental attacking the hydra's I could just turn around with my axe and kill them. Now I don't know if the fact that I had a fire elemental attacking the hydra's prevented them from growing new heads-But I didn't see any of 'em get new heads while I was employing this tactic. And they did go down fairly easily.

In the end my death happened due to a things happening at once/right after one another. I ran into an ice dragon, which I assumed would be tough. So I drank.. I think a might potion? And used the rage ability I got from an item (My amulet, I think. Can't remember the name. Started with a Z? ><) Ended up killing it pretty quickly, though I sustained a nasty bit of damage. I start resting when a hydra shows up! I start running to prepare my "elemental" strat. Wheeen... A merman(Woman?) pops out of the nearby water and makes it so I can only move towards them. So with my hp lowered from the fight with the dragon, and my inability to move away and 'prepare' for the fight. ..I got letoasted.

HOWEVER! I'm happy to say that my first encounter with Sigmund went rather well! I'd been practicing dodging around corners when I saw heroes or anything that I thought might be a spellcaster, so essentially he only got one spell off on more before engaging in melee and getting turned into manbacon.

Hill Orc Warrior. Fun.

So have any of you tried hellcrawl?

It has some rather interesting features such as:

no upstairs
no identification/curses
no food
complete dungeon progression rework
lots of monster rework

and lots and lots more.

Yeah not tried hellcrawl yet, but I probably will do soon... it sounds badass :))

Meanwhile, decided to try and illustrate my SpEn OP statement - I always like to run an OP combo after a win, just in case, so it felt like a good opportunity... so even though I am on a streak, and even though I rolled the combo to back up my 10 percenter SpEn statement, I still almost died of hubris twice: first I decided to lure an orc warrior I had already disarmed up some stairs for no real reason, forgetting a) they can still punch hard, and b) the stairs in question were laid out such that I would not be able to step away immediately at the top of them. Ended up at 2 HP by the time I put some distance in. Then at the bottom of lair I decided to passwalltz into the big snake vault, even though many previous visits have shown me its full of very fast and deadly snakes... I had to blink then telenope out of there... since then I have managed to keep things under control a bit better, although Agnes caused me some fun until I manged to confiscate her vampiric lajatang... I might end up using that, its a pretty good weapon, and allows me to go around lajastabbing, which always sounds cool. Anyway, Spider down, will prob head to Vaults next - Shoals can wait quite frankly.

So have any of you tried hellcrawl?
I'm scared.
Are we supposed to just wait a few hundred turns after clearing a floor to farm exp?

Nope - thats gone:
Code: [Select]
Unfeatures:
...
The out of depth clock. Monsters don't spawn over time except in abyss/on orbrun. More monsters spawn upon level generation to compensate....

along with
Code: [Select]
Abyss has no rune, no experience, and no items. Try not to go there
You are just meant to win with less XP and less stuff. There is no where to scum, no where to hide :)

edit:
gaa, there doesn't seem to be a console version? And no European server? Have to call it Helllag.

Hellcrawl is pretty much the FeBe experience distilled into a full game. You pick a berserker, tab through everything, auto explore, go down a floor, repeat. It's pretty enjoyable.
