The new feature letting you quiver spells is actually quite nice. Makes me way more open to giving spellcasters a fair try. (I know you can macro the number keys easily but it still feels like extra work to learn a new system.)

Haven't been getting far yet though! I don't think the game is harder I'm just way out of practice!

This was meant to be my first  15 run-er, got muttated bad in Pan (Frail 30%, scrolls take very long to read, strangely shaped body) and I was out of mutation potions, i.e. i think Tomb would be suicidal wit these mutations. I even abandoned Sif to Goazag to get some potions, but I only got two and they really did nothing. Pan got terribly hard to grind without Sif. Thus, tomb remains undefeated for me.  :(

For what it's worth, Tomb is a horrendous wretched hellscape for all but the most OP of characters. I go there every time I have a vaguely 15-rune viable char, which is why I don't have all that many 15-rune wins. It'll still be there on your next 15-runer, so, nothing major lost.

Honestly if you're at 14 runes and feeling frisky I'd say give a Zig a try first, before Tomb. The earlier floors will be easier, and you can escape reliably. Also, in a stark contrast to Tomb, ziggurats are fun.

Saying you abandoned Sif, did you initially go hybrid spellcaster on this MiFi? Brave :D

For me, DCSS is one game that doesn't fit the "Loosing is fun." philosophy, it feels bad every time I mess up and die. Except maybe some spectacular deaths when devs or RNGsus just kills you. :)

It was meant to be a 15 runer, I went directly Sif, even the 14 rune win leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Well, Tomb is either incredibly dangerous, or quite doable.
Take a earth elemental with Vehumet -> you can smash walls, and spam shatter to kill big mummy and their friends.
Take a fire Elemental with Vehumet -> you can ignite all this and finish the rest as you like.
Take a strong warrior with a strong axe, enough int to learn necromut and some immolation scrolls -> easy.

I only died once or twice in tomb. The real deal is "going extended or not". Either you do 5 (or, even better 4, because abyss can be incredibly tricky, too), either you do 15. But I don't see a lot of 14 runes. It's just being prepared and learn Necro and Transmut as soon as you go extended so you can cast Necromutation correctly when you do Tomb.

I remember back when you could clear tomb with summons. It gave them a very interesting niche that rewarded you for specializing in a school that would otherwise cripple you with its exp penalties.

Specifically, Iím talking about when summons would absorb mummy curses.

I've been playing a few Djinni characters after never sticking with spellcasters for more than a hot minute and I think they work really well as a kind of introduction, despite the eccentric mechanic of using HP for spellcasting. Since you only have to train Spellcasting and don't have to worry about spell slots or which schools to train, you get early access to a lot of combinations I never really got far enough to play with before. (I guess what I'm saying is that I can only keep track of like 3 things at a time, including HP and MP bars and levelling 2 skills.)

Right now I'm playing an Ice Elementalist early game where I got Conjure Flame, Corpse Rot, and Lesser Beckoning as my first three spells. The Frozen Ramparts were working pretty well alone, but now I can gently plop the enemies inside a poison or fire cloud depending on positioning before starting the fight. I might actually get a spellcaster past Lair!

I've also finally caved and started playing with graphics instead of ASCII and they've come a long way. I still prefer the ASCII a bit, but the spell-casting animations actually added to the immersion for me!

I am interested. I do not think I will have much time to play though, as my family will arrive tomorrow and will be here for about two weeks. I will still play some, might even get a win, but I do not expect to do a lot.

Basically, any DCSS newest release (0.27 this time) games played online count towards it.

You can either play on your own, or join a clan. The full overview of scoring and such can be found on https://crawl.develz.org/tournament/0.27/  .

The short version is, that achieving things for the first time and winning gives points. The more runes you have and the shorter the run is (both realtime and turncount), the more points for it.

way to go dormant discord channel, I would love to be part of a DF Crawl tourney team, for old times sake :)
If there is a "probably get a rune, but will probably screw up afterwards" level, between the champions and the blacksmiths, count me in :)
