Yeah, but it often recurses itself upon wielding, so it can be a problem to keep it unwielded. But anyway, for now there is a plenty of food for kobold, and when there will be no more branches with creatures to feed on(near midgame), vampiric draining will become a lot less useful anyway, so I will just drop that sword in my stash (I hope to find some more appropriate weapon).
If I won't die some stupid death by that time, that is.

I recently started playing this game, after owning a copy of it for quite a while.

I'd have to say this is one of the best roguelikes ever, in my personal top five. I love playing as conjurers and venom mages in this game, as both kick ass!

Well, I never tried to play as a summoner, but I think it is the same with any magic school. In every game, I try to get at least a few levels of Enchantments skill and learn a Selective Amnesia (it lets you forget spells) spell asap. It is very useful if you want to experiment with new spells and it doesn't spend any spell levels.

If only I could get that amnesia spell... I really wish I had it.  I'd forget Summon Imp at the very least, maybe mammals as well.  Later I'd get rid of summon scorps, although they do a great job against anything that is not poison immune (one cast makes 2-3 scorpions, so two casts and you can destroy a giant or cyclops, three casts or more can even take down a dragon if it is in the open).  I also have summon shadow creatures which is great is some branches (especially the elven halls) but not so great in others.

And for those who know: just how effective is demonic horde, anyway?  If I already have a good spell for mobbing my enemies (scorpions) is it still worth learning, or should I try summon demon?

Quote
P.S. Anyway, Enchantments skill is quite useful to any character, because it raises magic resistance.

Did not know that; that 's pretty useful to know.  The devs at sourceforge seem to be considering splitting up enchantments into more than one school because it is a bit powerful right now, but in the meantime it is a very useful skill to have.  My only victory consisted of a kobold who almost completely specialized in enchantments.

Summon mammals is very useful as a flood spell. At a certain point you start summoning multiple mammals, and that can be useful if you need to make some meat shields. Summon imp can be useful to summon shadow imps if you have a pile of corpses in the area. Mass raise dead is useful in a level 3 spell.

Demonic Horde summons 6+ multi-flavored imps at a time. Imagine an insanely high powered version of summon mammals. Not every imp will be friendly, but they are weak enough and you will have enough friendlies around that the occasional hostile imp won't matter.

Hmm, well that's not bad, but summon scorpions also makes about three hard-hitting critters per cast (which also poison, which is still nice at this stage), so maybe I'll just focus on the bigger demon.  If a caster has immunity to poison, the scortion spell is pretty win for level 4, although you do need to learn some poison magic to use it well.  Also, I have shadow creatures which is very nice in some branches but not so useful in others (for instance, it creates a huge mob of elven casters in the elven halls, but in the Lair is often creates rats and fungi....)

(edit)  Turns out Summon Demon is probably makes demonic horde kind of obsolete, since those "3" and "4" demons can summon a lot of "5" demons as well as raise dead, smite, and otherwise kick lots of ass.

So, I'm running this human crusader around and I decided to make use of entirely dex based skills, such as short and long blade, darts, dodging, etc. Something is striking me as odd, though. It says that blowguns and poisoned needles are based on the dart skill, but ever since I started using this blowgun my throwing has been raising along with my darts.

I did throw the darts for a long time (not the needles), but my throwing wasn't going up until I started using the blowgun. Weird? Am I missing something?

God daggers suck.

Edit - I misread your post - you know that blowguns don't fire darts... my next guess would be you just didn't have enough EXP initially for throwing to go up - it's normally a fairly slow skill. I'm fairly certain that using needles in a blowgun shouldn't raise throwing.

My guess would be that you're throwing darts while holding a blowgun.

Blowguns fire needles. (uses dart skill)

Hand crossbows fire darts. (uses x-bow skill, I think) - very rare weapon except in the elven halls.

Just for completionist sake...

bows fire arrows (uses bow skill)
crossbows fire bolts (uses x-bow skill)
slings fire stones or sling bullets (uses throwing and sling skills)

Hand Crossbows use the darts skill. At least, that's what it says.

As I said, I was throwing darts for a long time and only darts was raising, not throwing. Then, I started using my blowgun and, trust me I know the difference between shooting needles and throwing darts, and all of a sudden both my darts and throwing were raising.

Is it possible that darts and blowguns also using throwing skill? It's the only thing I can think of.

Let me reiterate that I was throwing darts from the start of the character, so my darts were at level 6 when, suddenly (about the same time I started using my blowgun almost exclusively over throwing darts) my throwing skill goes to 1, then 2 in no time.

Also, I am aware blowguns don't shoot darts. I figured that out on an earlier character because I thought it would make sense to use darts in the blowgun, only to realize that it wasn't working the way I thought it should. Eventually I read that they're used in hand crossbows... Possibly in this thread, or in the game manual itself.

Was it normal for my Dwarf Chaos Knight of Lugonu to be spawned in the Abyss. I mean, I know he's the God of the Abyss and all that, but that's kind of a harsh starting place (died to some demon-or-other). I only picked him because Xom was pissing me off.

I am pretty sure that the blowgun does use darts skill.  In older versions it did; also, I believe that "throwing" was a skill that all ranged weapons (incl launchers such as bows) exercised along with their weapon skill.  I think this has changed?  Maybe they remembered to change it for bows, xbows and slings, but forgot to change it for the blowgun?

Yes, Lugona CKs always start off in the abyss.  THere should be a gate nearby, and you can evoke a god given ability to leave the abyss at any time (unless you goof around and lose piety?).
